Before the FBI got involved with the KKK, there was Stetson Kennedy.
Stetson wrote a book about his infiltration of the KKK in the American South in the 1940s and 50s. It was published in Europe, but not the USA until the late 1970s, I think. It goes by two titles, one is "I Rode With the Klan".
It is a chilling story, but also gives good ideas about bringing down a hate group such as the KKK or Scn, Inc.
Stetson lived with Woodie Guthrie in a bus in the swamp around Jacksonville, FL, and wrote another book about that, "Palmetto Country" They kept guns, afraid the KKK would find them.
The legislation Florida still enjoys that prevents one from wearing a mask in public was designed to address the KKK; Stetson was instrumental in creating that bill.
I first met Stetson when he and my cousin were setting up a nonprofit to help indigenous people with social, economic and environmental justice. He also came later to speak about his experiences with the Klan at Univ. of South Florida. Stetson is older than dirt and a wonderful human being, and I admire him very much.
The last time he came to speak at USF, I brought up Scn, Inc. during the
audience question time. He agreed the organization needed some kind of
public attention, and also said it was for another generation to do what had
to be done, in his time it was the KKK. He said this smirking.

I'd never heard of Stetson. And I lived in Panama City, Florida--of course I was a kid, and in the Air Force, which had integrated schools (I went to Tyndall AFB Elementary), but I saw racism and Jim Crow everywhere and I have never forgotten what I saw there. One day my parents were driving through what the whites called "Niggertown", horrible word, but that's what they called it (we never did--we kids weren't allowed to use that word then or ever, in our house) and I saw the men lined up outside the unemployment office....not for handouts, but hoping for jobs, any jobs. Their women all worked as "coloured maids"--everyone even on the Base except us had one, but my parents told us kids it was exploitive and we weren't going to go there--but those men could not get work. The looks on their faces I will never forget. Strong and world weary and hopeless. This in a time and culture that valued menfolk working and women staying home and caring for their children and homes--but those men couldn't get work. I was young, but that stayed with me.
I think it forged my spirit of fighting these kinds of abuses. It makes me pretty weary of these supposedly big "OTs" and "Ethical, strong beings" flinging around the "bigot" line when they are the ones who hate and fear words so much they have to silence them, just as the KKK cloaked their terror in words like "Freedom Riders" and "Fighting for our women and children" and "keeping the streets safe", and crusaded against what they called "Uppity Nigras" (translation, any people that wanted the same rights as they did.) I see by the testimony of some of the PIs (in the Jesse Prince trial ) that although Jim Crow may have left, racism is still just as alive as it always was, but at least there is no more KKK, and it's no longer fashionable to express it as openly as it once was. Progress.
But something has to be done about Scn'y, Inc. and its abuse of people and the law.
At least the supply of incoming money is slowing, and that's good.
But it will take a lot more to break the monster's back.

Taking down the KKK was the result of education and especially litigation by
The Southern Povert Law Center against the KKK that struck at the heart of the
KKK -- their pocketbook. Morris Dees, Joe Levin and Julian Bond were the
primary activists that started the SPLC, which is based in Montgomery, Alabama.
Their address is Southern Poverty Law Center 400 Washington Avenue Montgomery, Alabama 36104 Tel: 334 956-8200 The SPLC has a 10 point primer on fighting the type of hate dished out by Scientology on a daily basis at:

A very funny segment is the cross examination of Gaston by the assistant
state attorney. She tries all her pre-written questions, only to have
him answer "I take the 5th" on most of them. I think that would have
been the moment she realized she was losing. I guess "assistant" is the
most she'll ever be in her career.
