"This young man may have been involved in the drug trade and with that ... we don't have anyone narrowed down as a hard suspect," said homicide Det. Ralph Godfrey.
Andrew Fletcher Buttnor, 18, was fatally shot in the head on 115 Avenue near 139 Street before 5 a.m. on Oct. 3. The gruesome discovery was made by a Sun newspaper carrier.
Detectives believe the shot came from inside Buttnor's 1992 navy Ford Escort LX, which was on display for media yesterday at the police impound lot, 12230 124 Ave.
Sun carrier Bren Lima, 43, was helping her 12-year-old son deliver papers when she found Buttnor's body and called 911.
The car's lights were still on but the vehicle wasn't running.
Buttnor - who had no fixed address but was staying in south Edmonton - was slumped to the right and the driver's side window had been smashed by a bullet.
He died of a single shot to the head.
Forensics swept the car for prints and seized a number of items from inside but have no solid leads as a result.
"The investigation still has momentum but it's not happening as fast as I would like after two months," said Godfrey.
The Escort was originally purchased at a Grande Prairie dealership.
Its plate bears a registration sticker through 2001.
Buttnor was known to police but has not been identified as a gang member. The city's gang unit has been consulting with homicide detectives on the case. Godfrey said Buttnor's friends and family have been offering what information they can to help find his killer.
"It's pretty tough on the family. He was just a kid," said Godfrey, nodding towards the blood-splattered driver's seat.
Buttnor is the son of Allan Buttnor, a Church of Scientology minister.
The teen was not a member of the church.
Allan Buttnor was unavailable for comment last night.
But the family and investigators hope displaying the car - bloodstains and all - will help "refresh people's memories" and generate more tips, said Godfrey.
"We're trying to stimulate more feedback from the public, anything they may have seen or heard, or anybody who has knowledge of this young man's background, that would assist us," said Godfrey.
Police have not recovered the weapon but believe the gunman may have used a silencer.
"It was early in the morning on a residential street but at this point nobody's come forward in that area that heard or saw anything," said Godfrey.
No drugs were found in the car.
