What Chemehuev said.
I have not yet seen "the Profit", except a few clips shown on local TV news.
(I might add, it has received more local exposure than other films shot locally, including one starring Burt Reynolds, have received) However, I was anticipating a film pertaining to how a person is, as Mark so aptly put it, "seduced" into a cult scenario. I was hoping inside that the film would follow several very different individuals through their experience of joining and then leaving, or joining and staying, or joining and leaving and becoming a Freezoner.
It disappoints me that the film seems to focus primarily on a pseudoHubbard's rise to power; I was more interested in the development of the corporate aspect of Scn, Inc., and its effect on a community such as CW - which reflects pseudoHubbard's *loss* of power to lawyers and those who would desire community government and media control for vested interests.
But we all have our druthers. Peter Alexander is best known for designing thrill rides based on movie experiences. It seems this is a movie experience based on a thrill ride.
Everyone here has to admit, in Chris Schafmeister's memorable words, that Sci, Inc, is not easily explained to anyone "without several hours and some graphs and charts." I believe this is part of the reason it is still allowed to exist, because there is so much CRAP to sort through, and people are too busy to do it themselves.
Which is why I was hoping the Profit would be a good movie that focused on the impact of pseudoHubbard's behavior, not the behavior itself.
I have no concept of the infighting between the Profit and the LMT, and I
really don't care about it. I think Mark's review is, like Mark, honest,
reasonable and forthcoming, despite the charged atmosphere.
