freehenson.tripod.com was slashdotted today, and was removed,
probably just therefore. The alternative freehenson.da.ru had
the same fate. And it seems there is no full mirror anywhere.
I do not read ars any more, so things like this take me by surprise. However, I do run a web server and a domain name server and a mail server and what have you, and I have an excellent upstream ISP. I have never had a problem putting things on the web and keeping them there, so situations like these take me by surprise and make me wonder why the hell.
Thus:
- Anybody needing web space has free web space on my server.
- Anybody needing technical advice and help to run their own server (*DSL, cable) has a competent free consultant in me.
- Anybody needing "side services" like DNS, mailing lists, webfora, what have you, can have them for the asking.
My server has been slashdotted three times in the past three months and coped beautifully, even though I couldn't even fetch my mail in the meanwhile.
In other words: here is a resource, so use it. The ad-financed US-based, DMCA ass-licking fine-print-riders are not the ones to set your limits.
For the rest I think it is ridiculous that ars, the greatest non-organisation this world has ever seen, still doesn't have some form of collective resources in this direction. Lots of people in this community have resources similar to or better than mine. Coordinating some efforts (while maintaining the principles of non-organisation) can work miracles. Why don't we?
Will you CC replies to me svp?
