It is so odd, looking back. I remember picking up that lurid Time magazine with the volcano and tentacles on the cover. I read the article, too, but it just didn't "take." Maybe it's because I'm more visual, or it didn't have the impact needed to get me on board, I don't know.
But it was the A&E two hour special on Scientology that yanked my chain, and I can tell you exactly what part of that show made my ears perk up. It was Dennis Erlich talking about being held in a chicken wire cage in Florida. That did it for me, I was filled with righteous outrage at this kind of betrayal and abuse. Then I went to the website displayed on a banner held by a bunch of picketers, and the story of Paulette Cooper was the one that lit my rockets. And I thought, 'this should not be allowed to continue in my America."
Of course, the America I thought I knew is being eroded by fundies, billionaires and conservatives, but despite that, I still feel that Scientology must be forced to accept the fact that abusing people, trying to scuttle basic free speech and human rights is wrong and that it will not be permitted to continue perpetrating fraud, extortion and intimidation with impunity.
Until that happens, I am on board. Gangsta fo' life! But hey, they pulled me in.

"Imagine a church so dangerous, you must sign a release form before you can receive its "spiritual assistance." This assistance might involve holding you against your will for an indefinite period, isolating you from friends and family, and denying you access to appropriate medical care. You will of course be billed for this treatment - assuming you survive it. If not, the release form absolves your caretakers of all responsibility for your suffering and death.
Welcome to the Church of Scientology."
