Prison appoints witch as chaplain
A US prison has appointed a witch as its chaplain.
The Rev Jamyi Witch will minister to inmates at the maximum-security jail in Waupun, Wisconsin.
Rev Jamyi is a witch practising the pagan Wiccan religion. Christian ministers have criticised the appointment.
Department of Corrections officials say the witch met the position's requirements and it would also be unfair and illegal to bar her from serving because of her faith.
The Waupun Correctional Institute has other volunteer ministers so inmates will also have a choice.
But local politician Scott Walker says the local authorities may 'look into' the witch's appointment.
"I can't imagine that most of the inmates would feel particularly comfortable going to that individual," Mr Walker told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Gary McCaughtry, the institution's warden said: "Basically, a lot of it has to do with the duties and character of the individual, and Jamyi is an outstandingly approachable person - somebody that I wouldn't mind approaching on spiritual matters myself."
Satanists or members of some violent cults, especially those associated with hate groups, wouldn't be allowed to serve.
A spokesman for the state prison system said: "Times have changed, it's not just Catholic and Protestant anymore."
