You can find the "Brainwashing Manual" on the internet. It's potentially one of the most damaging documents for Scientology, yet it is perfectly free and it is not copyrighted. Many have speculated on the purpose of the Brainwashing Manual which was published by L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Many have also speculated on the possibility that Scientology uses the Brainwashing Manual for its own research by OSA, even today. But the Brainwashing Manual does not say that Scientology uses brainwashing, it says psychiatrists use brainwashing.
This gimmick of switching subject and objects, however, has been used in the past by Scientology, such as in Hubbard's instructions for breaking and entering. The front of the instructions claims the purpose of the rest of the material is to stop anyone else from breaking into Scientology offices. Then why were Scientologists convicted of breaking into other people's offices?
Anyway, in an old Hubbard document ("The Turn of the Tide", Operational Bulletin Nbr. 9 of December 19, 1955) in a section called "Brainwashing Manual History," he stated that he used word subsitution in the Brainwashing Manual and had plans on using it for future research.
Hubbard always used word tricks like word substitution or indirect statements in any situation where his words could be construed as evidence for any illegal activity. Here's the citation from Hubbard:
"In our studies of brainwashing it has been necessary to procure what information existed on the subject. Fortuitously, in Phoenix there came into our hands two manuscripts on the subject; as well as I can recollect, they were left there at the front desk with the request that they be mailed back to their owner. We are not sure exactly from whom these came, but we understand now that this is unimportant since the subject is broadly rather well known in a book on Psychopolitics. It is to be found in the Library of Congress. It is in German, but we suppose it is the same manual. As we needed this material for research, we read it off onto a tape, compiling the two manuals and removing from them some of their very verbose nomenclature, substituting for it more common English terms, and we have had a few copies of this struck off for use in our research."
I have quoted sections of the Brainwashing Manual before on this news group at appropriate times to illustrate that the instructions in the Brainwashing Manual are still in use today, especially the part where it says to make use of claims that the other person is insane in the event one meets with skepticism. Just use word substitution, such as replace the word ""Psychiatry" with "Scientology". This is in keeping with other quotes from Hubbard, namely that Scientology intends to assimilate every function currently performed by psychiatry.
