    This is an important point.  But I've heard that in the US
    the other spin occurs.  Ie. the individual is treated as a
    commercial entity, stripped of the protection of common law,
    and judged according to commercial law.  (admiralty law?)

    Absolutely.  The whole society here is set up on the basis
    that the corporations have the clout and the individual gets
    (as Regan put it) "trickled on."
