ABORTION CLINIC OFFERS TO RELEASE THREE JAILED PRO-LIFERS IN RETURN FOR
COMMUNITY SERVICE  (12/6/90)

The Northeast Women's Center today announced that it was willing to ask a
Federal Judge to release three "pro-life" activists who have been confined
in prison for a month, in return for their agreement to spend 400 hours in
a specified community service.  The offer was made to the attorneys for
the demonstrators yesterday.

According to the clinic's attorney, Edmond A. Tiryak, the clinic has
offered to seek their release if they work out an agreement with "any area
hospital to spend 400 hours, over the next 5 months, holding, comforting,
and providing tactile reinforcement to abandoned, drug addicted, or AIDS
infected infants."

Tiryak said that the offer was designed to demonstrate the horrors that
unwanted pregnancies offer to infants, as a means of educating the
demonstrators. "There are literally thousands of infants in the
Philadelphia area who are in dire straits, and who have no one willing
even to hold and comfort them. Hopefully, this offer will lead McMonagle
and his cohorts into helping real babies, rather than being preoccupied
with abortion."

The three protesters, Michael McMonagle, Howard Walton, and Patricia
McNamara, were found by Federal Judge Lowell Reed to be in contempt of his
injunction which barred harassment of the clinic's employees at their
homes. As punishment, he ordered them to pay the clinic's attorney
$100.00.  Since the three have refused to pay this sum, they are currently
spending 45 days in prison.

The clinic made the offer as a "holiday attempt to show good faith and
reduce tension."
