This is a bit out of date, but here's an interesting quote.
"The federal government's -Dictionary of Occupational Titles- ...considered
the world's most comprehensive source of job information ... used by a wide
range of public and private emlployment specialists...the basis on which many
large organizations evaluate job prerequisites, career ladder criteri and place
in the classification AND COMPENSATION hierarchies...all in all, multimillion
dokllar dicisions affecting millions of workers' lives are said to be made with
the help of DOT ratings. "
(Jobs are rated from one to 8 on the scale of complexity in 3 categories;
data, people and things. E.G. a surgeon's job is rated 101. "Just about the
lowest possible rating is an 878, here is an example:
FOSTER MOTHER (DOMESTIC SERVANT)...878. Rears childen in own home as members
of family. Oversees activities, regulating diet, rest periods, recreation, and
sleeping time,. Instructs children in good personal and health habits.
Bathes, dresses and undresses young children. Washes and irons clothing.
Accompanies children on outings and walks.
Takes disciplinary action when children misbehave...., May work under
supervision of welfare agency. May prepare periodic reports concerninc
progress and behaviour of children for welfare agency.
Ranking almost but not quite as low as foster mother was the following
occupational title, which received a slightly higher 874:
HORSE PUSHER (agric.)...874. Feeds, waters and otherwise tends horses en route
by train.

DOT (part 2)
... the ratings were perfectly consistent with theDOT scoring of a
whole series of jobs traditionally filled by women...
CHILD CARE ATTENDANT, 878... "house parent, special school counselor, cares for
groups of children in government institutions..."
rated the same as
PARKING LOT ATTENDANT, 878...."..parks automobiles for customers in parking
lot...."
NURSERY SCHOOL TEACHER, 878-- "organises and leads activities of children,
maintains discipline..."
much less complex than
MARINE MAMMAL HANDLER, 328-- "signals or cues trained marine mammals..."
NURSE, PRACTICAL, 878-- "cares for patients and children in private homes,
hospitals..."
only slightly less complex than
OFFAL MAN, POULTRY, 877-- "shovels ice into chicken offal container."
NURSE, MIDWIFE, 378
nearly as skilled as
HOTEL CLERK, 368
HOMEMAKER (cross references MAID, GENERAL), 878
nearly as skilled as
DOG POUND ATTENDANT, 874
and so on. Yes, I know that these aren't exactly the same job; but they are
rate the same, and that means, for a good many employers, they are paid the
same.
