FBI HAD FEMINISTS UNDER WATCH
Feminists protesting the 1968 Miss America Pageant were targeted for
surveillance by the FBI, according to published report. The
surveillance order came from the Johnson administration, according
to the FBI documents obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer through
the Freedom of Information Act.
The FBI characterized the inquiry as an "anti-riot" matter, the
newspaper said. The inquiry began less than a month after Chicago
police and demonstrators protesting the Vietnam War clashed in a
bloody confrontation at the Democratic National Convention.
Robin Morgan, editor in chief of Ms. magazine, said the Johnson
administration may have been interested in the contest because the
pageant supported the war but the protesters didn't.
