Help Commemorate the Brookline Anniversary

On December 30, 1994, a lone gunman entered two clinics in Brookline,
Massachusetts, and opened fire, killing two women and injuring five other
people. This was the single worst incident of anti-abortion violence, but
it was not the first, or the last. Since 1991, six people have been shot to
death, and eleven others shot and wounded, by anti-abortion extremists. Since
the legalization of Roe v. Wade in 1973, there have been over a hundred
incidents of arson or bombing, dozens if not hundreds of assaults, hundreds
of incidents of vandalism and countless death threats.

On Saturday, December 30, 1995, pro-choice groups and individuals across the
country will be marking the Brookline anniversary with what many are calling
a "Day of Mourning and Action." Whether it's through protests, memorial
services, demonstrations, or candlelight vigils, the pro-choice community
will be honoring the dead and urging action on the part of the government,
law enforcement, and, most importantly, the women and men of this country to
put a stop to the violence.

I urge everyone reading this to find out if something is being done in your
community on that day, and if it is, to take part. If not, then organize
something - it doesn't matter how big, or how small. And please let me know
what you're doing. I'm part of a group of people who have been working together
to promote these events. We can help put you in touch with others who are
working on similar efforts, provide you with information on clinic
violence that can be shared with your community, help publicize your event,
etc. Whatever you need to get something done on this date, let us know and
we'll be there to assist you.

Help Spread the Word About Another Shooting

On November 10, 1995, Dr. Hugh Short was shot as he sat in his home in
Ancaster, Ontario. His elbow was shattered in the attack. This is the second
shooting of a doctor in Canada, and came just two days short of the
anniversary of the shooting of Dr. Garson Romalis in Vancouver, British
Columbia. It's the sixth time that a doctor in North America has been shot by
anti-abortion extremists; three of them have died. At least ten other
people have been shot, three fatally. Others have been shot at but not
wounded.

This story was barely mentioned by the American media. I first heard of the
shooting from a reader of this web site 13 days after the fact, and it took
a day and a half to find any details.

Please help spread the word of this shooting throughout the pro-choice
community and throughout the country. If your local media did not report the
story, ask them why not, and demand that they cover it. (If they did cover it,
please let me know!) We cannot allow a doctor to be shot and wounded in
silence.

Help Keep Abortion and Reproductive Health Services of Albuquerque Open

In January and February, 1995, the Abortion and Reproductive Health Services
(ARHS) clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico (the state's only non-profit clinic),
was the site of several incidents of vandalism and arson. As a result of this
violence, other tenants left the building. The clinic's landlord, faced with
a serious loss of revenue, has evicted the clinic. In order to relocate, the
clinic needs to raise $25,000.
