SUNSET ON BIG BLUE
Los Angeles, Ca.
September 1, 2000 had been a peaceful and sleepy morning in Santa Monica, California. At least, until mid-morning when the telephone repeatedly rang. I repeatedly let it roll over to voicemail. There were no messages left. Finally, after 12 noon, I answered. There was silence at the other end. "Hubbard was crazy," I said. As usual, this caused a click at the other end of the line. Scientology raw meat I thought. Then I learned that Keith Henson had not picketed at Hemet that morning either. That explained the hang-up calls. OSA had missed me and wanted to confirm where I was.
I sped down to the beach on my roller blades, and up the bike path to Will Rodgers beach. It is in front of a local landmark, Patrick's Roadhouse, where Arnold Schwarzenegger often eats breakfast. The posh Pacific Palisades area is above the bluffs. Beyond, sailboats slowly sliced the sun soaked Pacific Ocean and all seemed well on the eve of the annual Labor Day long weekend. After a time it seemed selfish for me to luxuriate in the freedom of the sand and surf while there were enslaved souls being denied true spiritual freedom, freedom of will, freedom of thought and freedom of association. I raced back down the bike path to my home of ten years. I would soon lose it as a consequence of OSA's illegal operations and abuses of process against me. These had commenced before the perjurious May 5,1994 Cipriano Declaration now demonstrably obtained by OSA's blackmail, bribery and obstruction of justice. All being after, and contrary to, Scientology's express material representations to the contrary made in connection with the 1993 grant of section 501 (c) (3) status. I had trapped OSA in the ultimate Operation Foot bullet!
I made a quick call to a friend and told him of my plans. Two minutes after we hung up he called back. He said: " your telephone is bugged. As soon as we hung up I got this telephone call that merely snarled: 'stay away from Graham Berry.' Don't get involved in this stuff." I said that I was not surprised because I had found OSA tapped into my telephone line before and Elliot Abelson, Esq., had essentially admitted it in writing. My friend then said: "The only way that they could have known about our conversation is if they had the line bugged." Maybe parabolic microphones I mused.
Soon I was cruising down the freeway to Hollywood. I was appropriately dressed in my stylish black "Scientology Kills" t-shirt . I was armed with picket-sign, camera and cell-phone. I learned that Keith Henson was also taking his own message of political, religious and spiritual freedom to the scientology souls trapped inside scientology's deadly desert gulag on Highway 79 at Gilman Hot Springs, near Hemet, California. It masquerades as the Golden Era Film Studios.
Back in Hollywood, Big Blue (the old Cedars Sinai Hospital building) looked even shabbier than usual. Peeling paint. A half-abandoned and gutted floor. Over-crowded and unsanitary living conditions. It must have hundreds of Health and Safety Code violations, I mused. Would scientology fix them? Nah. Religious immunity! Another preferential benefit for the tax-exempt business of selling scientology products and processing, and shielding the churches political and commercial enterprises.
Having the name of Berendo Street changed to L.Ron Hubbard way was another political manipulation by the church - principally over the Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro.I had spoken against the name change at a City Council meeting. "L.Ron Hubbard's way was not the American way", I had vainly pleaded. Mike Rinder ("WDC-OSA") had followed me and he had vigorously denounced me as a bigot. Council members had been subjected to the church's usual methods of lobbying pressure. Jackie Goldberg and several other council members had pointedly gone to the restrooms just before the vote. Mayor Riordan was out of town and therefore unable to veto the street-name change. And because the Mayor was out of town, the City Council President was able to sign the name-change into law the very same day. It was a fait accompli. Los Angeles now commerated a drug-addled cult leader convicted of fraud and writing bad checks. Who had killed L.R.H. anyway?
With a little knowledge and absolutely no exteriorisation, it must have seemed that I had suddenly appeared in the very midst of L.Ron Hubbard Way at sunset on that late summer evening. The city block was crowded with staffers and public members arriving for evening courses. They stood around and idly chatted. The Estates Project Force ("EPF") was cleaning the street gutters.
It seemed as though I stood in the very middle of L.Ron Hubbard Way for a full five minutes before terror suddenly darkened the faces of 100 or more relaxing scientologists. Suddenly someone realized what I was doing and carrying - the truth! Security staffers came tumbling out of the PAC Base cafeteria. Their eyes flashed with seething anger and embarrassment.
Scientology security rapidly set about clearing the panicked street. Stunned thetans were herded like flocks of sheep, into AOLA and the American St.Hill building. Like the Sheppard that Rick Moxon often refers to me as being, I followed them with my picket sign as rod and staff. However, unlike Lot's wife, none of the fleeing scientologists dared to look back and read my message: "LRH died on Psych drugs."
The scrambling scientology security staffers had the street clear by 6:45pm.However, those in the American St.Hill building lobby were still able to see the other side of my picket sign: "Scientology: church of fair game", to which myself and millions of others can personally testify. Soon the fleeing OTs and other less powerful thetan beings were pushed into internal course rooms. Outside the birds were talking in the trees where squirrels were noticeably absent. The sun slowly sunk lower on Big Blue and all it represents.
The dozen or scientology security staffers and I then settled down to our usual Mexican standoff for the next sixty minutes. The staffers nostrils were frothing blood. However, absolute silence remained their new response to me. Absolute silence and their new DA flyer: "who is this man and why is he here?" I told one that it was all triggered and suborned by OSA and that it was now largely recanted!" "Well it's written right here" he responded. Ah, Hubbard's amazing technology: "if its written it is true" and "it is true if it is true for you." He ignored my challenge for his name so that he could be sued. No matter. CSI is clearly responsible.
I then recalled that after Judge Williams had ignored Robert Cipriano's first recant of the May 5,1994 Cipriano declaration, Sandy Rosen and Rick Moxon (two birds of a feather) had hissed: "Berry just does not get it." I think I do now. I had submitted the Cipriano recant, and related documents, to the District Attorney Gil Garcetti. One of his principal aides (and an acquaintance of mine) responded. "Gil cannot touch it for political reasons. Don't ask me the reasons. One day I may be able to tell you. I suggest you start with LAPD Internal Affairs." A package was delivered to Commander McMurray of Internal Affairs. There is no longer any record of its receipt, existence and handling. At the vexatious litigant hearing, Scientology in-house attorney Rick Moxon had introduced Gerald Chaleff, a leading criminal defense attorney, as his own lawyer. Gerald Chaleff was also the Church of Scientology International lawyer at the vexatious litigant hearing. Gerald Chaleff is chairman of the Los Angeles Police Department Commission. Moxon's investigator, Eugene Ingram, is a former LAPD officer. In addition, the Church of Scientology's Operation Snow White was still in existence. One of the purposes of Snow White was to remove "entheta" or material adverse to scientology from official records.
Scientology's inroads into the Los Angeles City establishment run deep. John ("Jack") Quinn, former Los Angeles County Bar President, is one of scientology's lawyers. President Clinton recently appointed Jack Quinn's law partner Margaret Morrow to the local federal district court. Howard Weitzman, of John Delorean acquittal fame, had been one of scientology's lawyers at the time Bill Drescher joined the church's legal ranks. Their then firm was Wyman Bautzer. Federal Judge Marian Pfaelzer is a former Wyman Bautzer partner. The RTC v. Mayo case was initially assigned to Judge Pfaelzer. Wyman Bautzer lawyers visited the judge ex parte to ascertain whether she would adhere to her practice of reusing herself from all cases involving her former law firm. She would make an exception for this scientology case and she became its initial judge. On another occasion Earle C. Cooley, Esq. (Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Boston University), Jesse Prince and other church officials attempted to pay an ex parte midnight visit to Judge Pfaelzer's home in connection with the pending case. I have the FBI investigation report. Jesse Prince may one day publish further details.
Similarly, Barbara Reeves, Esq., then of the giant Paul, Hasting law firm, is married to a certain Court of Appeals judge, which enabled yet another scientology manipulation of the appellate panel hearing the appeal of the amended judgment in the Wollersheim case. And the list of infiltration and compromise just goes on and on. All of it according to scientology scripture such as the 16 February 1969 Hubbard Communication Office Policy Letter,"Confidential: Targets, Defense:"("taking over the control or allegiance of key political figures, the heads or the proprietors of all news media and the control of those who monitor international finance.") Since the five part Los Angeles Times expose on Scientology ten years ago, that paper had almost completely ignored the cult. It even ignored major scientology exposes' that were reported by the New York Times and the Washington Post.
There was little else to do but to engage in such musings this warm summers sunset on scientology in Hollywood. The scientology security staffers did an excellent job of interfering with my constitutional right to take my message to all those who had been, or otherwise would have been, on L.Ron Hubbard Way. Occasionally someone would sneak from PAC to AOLA and then out the side entrance to Bridge Publications on New Hampshire Street.
I kept strolling around the empty street and the security staffers either followed behind at a distance, or kept the OTs and other thetans away from my message of truth. As darkness descended at 8 pm, I wandered past the International Association of Scientologists building, tailed by a security goon, and I then drove-off as the "all clear" call was made back to PAC.
Life would quickly return to its usual coercive indoctrination on L.Ron Hubbard Way. "Upsets" would be "processed" and "sec checs" given to certain SO security staffers. However, I would return to Santa Monica, take a Jacuzzi and ponder the prospect of a weekend on the beach. What message would we take to the cult of blackmail, bribery, corruption, fraud and lies next week?
