Transcription of letter to Jane Scott, received on March 30, 2001,
from an older woman friend in California with whom she had not
communicated for over 2 years.
Scotti:
Despite some initial hesitancy, I feel somewhat compelled to apprise you of a rather bizarre phone call I received last night. When a male voice introduced himself and expressed the wish that I could extend some assistance, I thought it was from a telemarketer and began to excuse myself. He interrupted to tell me that he had information that I could be of real value in supplying "some background information on a Jane Scott." I demurred and he said: "She is supporting an attorney in Los Angeles by the name of Graham Berry." There was an obvious expectation of some kind of shock from me and when it was not forthcoming, he repeated his words in cold, measured tones and added something to the effect that the attorney was of dubious moral character and that he owed $300,000 to the attorney whose name he mentioned (I was feeling outrage and disbelief and remember that it began with an "M"; perhaps Italian and 3 or 4 syllables. I think I would recognize it were I to hear it again.
Almost at once it clicked (there are fortunately not many who would engage in such behaviours) and I asked: "are you affiliated with Scientology?" He didn’t answer my question and kept on talking. Again I asked and he said he was representing this "Mr. M". I said that he was not answering my question and he replied that I hadn’t answered his question. I pointed out that he had initiated the call and I would appreciate an answer. He told me that he would have to ask this "Mr. M." I inquired if he was in any way affiliated with Scientology. Again he refused to answer but continued talking in tones quite different from the original, ingratiating ones. As my sense of outrage was increasing I told him that I did not wish to continue the conversation, said a quick goodbye and hung up the telephone.
Steve [Jane Scott’s ex husband] has called a couple of times, but I made it clear I had no communication with you. He had intimated that you were "pretty much living in L.A. and that you were giving a great deal of money to Graham Berry." In that I have an unlisted phone number, I am offended that these people were able to access it. I doubt they will limit their inquiries to me. I hope that there is something to be done to curtail their activities.
Sincerely
[signiature]
