The golf course seems to be fairly well-used. It's open to the public,
in fact I have a nice "Golden Era" hat I bought at the pro shop once
when I was there with Keith, Bob and Stacy.
The inmates are generally too far away to talk to. When we show up,
they pull anyone who might be nearby (like working on the landscaping)
away. See the story about them fleeing, leaving a wheelbarrow full of
concrete to harden when Bruce Pettycrew showed up for an example. If
they ~did~ try to talk to us, they'd get in trouble. Richardson and
Petty throw their videocams on the compound at times when we're walking,
probably to identify anyone who looks our direction. It's eerie to watch
them "not see us" when we're there, sometimes by hiding behind a building
or vehicle, sometimes like in Deana's recent mention, holding something
over their eyes while in sight of us, but mostly by working very hard not
to look in our direction. You can see them working on say, cleaning up
the area, and watch them look in every direction except towards us.
Personally, I have trouble understanding this behavior. I realize that
they are told not to look at our signs, and they will get into trouble if
they are caught looking, but how do they manage to deal with it in their
minds. They are taught that they are becoming powerful beings with the
ability to control the universe, yet they can't ~look~ at signs. They
~know~<snicker> that there are powerful "OTs" there who can control matter,
energy, space and time among them, yet they hide behind buildings to avoid
words. How can they NOT cog to the fraud? How can they see such "powerful
beings" cowering in fear of words, and not decide that "that's not what I
want to grow up to be"?
