POPE DEFENDS REFUGEE RIGHTS
(Castel Gandolfo, Italy-AP) -- Pope John Paul the Second says countries have
a duty to welcome refugees, treat them with dignity, and respect their rights
and cultures. The 81-year-old Pope defended the rights of refugees in his
weekly address. It came a day after the United Nations marked the 50th
anniversary of the Geneva Convention on refugees. He told pilgrims at his
summer residence at Castel Gandolfo southeast of Rome that he hoped to see
greater protection and solidarity for those forced to leave their native
lands.
