In some of my off a.r.s writing I recently mentioned that I could not think of a current cult that strongly invoked capture-bonding, otherwise known as the Stockholm Syndrome, though the Moonies came close by taking people to remote places where they built up fear they would not be permitted to return. However . . . In the course of some memetics research I ran into a person who had been in both early EST and scientology. I was discussing the Patty Hearst kidnapping/bonding with this person. The person went into a detailed description of the abuse which was heaped on the people in the early EST "events" and it became clear EST was evoking capture-bonding. My informant was scared and utterly awed at the emotional excesses demonstrated by the rest of the crowd. Until I proposed capture-bonding it had been a completely unexplained slice of weirdness. *After* EST, my informant was in scientology for a time. While there my informant observed one time when the Flag staff was on lower conditions. The saddest thing was this 200 pound lump of uncolored margarine or lard set for the staff to use, and all the little hunks that had been taken out of it with a spoon. Keith Henson
