I don't want to be a wet blanket on such efforts, but I think you should know that it will take a lot more.

Let me provide you two examples.

The first is the FBI. From the testimony of the last few weeks re the 9/11 attacks, we would have been a lot better off *without* the FBI for the last ten years. My files are full of reply letters from various law enforcement agencies where they said, "this sure looks like crime to us, but it crosses state boundaries, so you will have to take it to the FBI." (Paraphrase, but close to what they said).

Former FBI agent Eric Pham told me years and year ago that the FBI would not investigate, i.e., could not get permission from headquarters to investigation anything remotely like a religion. Had there not been any "FBI" to put the responsibility for dealing with these criminal organizations on, the local police agencies would have had to do something.

Second example, Senator Roth, now retired. This was one of the most powerful senators around, powerful enough to hold hearings on the abuses of the IRS even. I have talked to someone very close to him, and it is really clear that neither Ross nor anyone else of that level of power is likely to investigate scientology. It is just *too* much controversy and potential for trouble.

It is not like members of congress don't know scientology is a dangerous cult that is undermining the government in a number of places. They just don't want to deal with it. The problem is not unique to the US either, it took France and Germany a long time to work up the will and the cult doesn't have nearly as much influence there.

The Canadians have an interesting expression, nobody wants to "lift the tail of the skunk." Last time they went after scientology they collected a 1/4 million fine after spending 20 million.

Still, persistence in keeping your representative's feet to the fire about the continual abuses of the cult is worth while. Even if it does not take their illegal tax exemption or get them investigated, it does keep the cult from getting government handouts.
