TAMPA - been transferred from Hillsborough County to Pinellas. The case involves the 1995 death of Scientologist Lisa McPherson after a 17-day stay at the church's spiritual headquarters in Clearwater. The lawsuit, filed by McPherson's survivors in early 1997, states that the church held McPherson against her will. The church denies the allegation. Lawyers for the church had asked for the transfer, saying most of the incidents at issue happened in Pinellas rather than in Hillsborough. They also argued that most of the witnesses live in Pinellas. Lawyers for the McPherson family, however, argued that traveling between the counties wasn't a hardship and noted that most of the lawyers involved in the case are based in Hillsborough. The transfer, ordered late last month by Hillsborough Circuit Judge James S. Moody Jr., likely will again delay a case that had been scheduled to go to trial this summer. Moody since has moved to the federal bench. http://tampatrib.com/FloridaMetro/MGIMY643NBC.html
