Indeed, isn't that *THE* issue here? The Clearwater Police Department, as well as the Clearwater City Council, knew exactly, unequivocally, in great detail, what Scientology Inc. is and how it opperates. Fast forward twenty years, and what do we see--- Clearwater Police officers ON SCIENTOLOGY INC.'S PAY ROLL, to the tune of over one hundred thousand dollars; a City Counsil that pretends to not knopw why Clearwater is an economic ghost town, with tourists *AFRAID* to visit; a newspaper that has been neutered and rendered harmless; more property removed from the tax roll.
Counties get a yearly 1% from property tax. The crime syndicate has almost $31,000,000 currently tax-exempt, and the "Sooopeeer Powerrrz" building appears to be poised to turn that figure to $86,000,000 in tax-exempted property. One per cent per year means the county is being shorted a great deal of money---- funds that the rest of the citizenry often has to bare the burden of, as the crime syndicate still receives city, county, and federal services for that tax-exempt property.
The crime syndicate also doesn't pay sales tax for their "services," books, tapes, etc. This must run into the millions of dollars in lost taxes every year.
Customers of the crime syndicate can claim tax breaks for purchases of Scientology, yet again increasing the tax burden on other citizens. All this, and the City Council of Clearwater pretends to shake its collective head in mystification over why Clearwater is dying. They must never have heard of tape worms nor what they do to their hosts.
