Striker Fashanu charged with making bribes to goalkeepers

SOUTHAMPTON, England (Oct 11, 1995 - 17:24 EDT) -- Former
Premier League striker John Fashanu was charged with paying
bribes to two goalkeepers as details of England's biggest
match-fixing scandal in 30 years were revealed Wednesday.
Fashanu appeared in Southampton Magistrates Court along with Southampton goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, Wimbledon goalkeeper Hans Seger and Malaysian businessman Heng Suan Lim.
All four were released on conditional bail until Dec. 1.
The four were arrested last March and were charged in July with conspiring to fix matches between Feb. 1, 1991, and March 15, 1995.
Wednesday's court appearance marked the first time that details of the charges against the men were disclosed.
Fashanu is accused of making cash payoffs to Grobbelaar and Segers to fix the outcome of two Liverpool matches in 1993 and 1994.
Grobbelaar, the former Liverpool goalkeeper, allegedly accepted $63,000 from Fashanu in London on Nov. 25, 1993 to fix the Nov.
21 Newcastle-Liverpool game. Liverpool lost 3-0.
Grobbelaar is also charged with accepting $3,000 from his former Zimbabwean business partner Christopher Vincent on Nov.
3, 1994 at Southampton "for improperly influencing the outcome of a football match or matches."
Segers, Wimbledon's Dutch goalkeeper, is charged with receiving $30,000 from Fashanu in London between Oct. 21 and Oct. 25, 1994 to fix the outcome of the Oct. 22 Wimbledon-Liverpool match. Liverpool won 3-0.
Fashanu's wife, Melissa Kassa-Mapsi, was originally arrested and charged with the four men, but the Crown Prosecution Service has dropped charges against her.
In court, the three players and the Malaysian businessman spoke only to give their name, age and address.
Outside the courthouse, Fashanu and Grobbelaar greeted each other warmly with a hug.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of seven years in jail and/or an unspecified fine.
The accusations represent the biggest match-fixing scandal in English soccer since 1965, when three top flight players were jailed for accepting money to rig results.
Fashanu has retired from soccer after a series of injuries and is now a host of the popular television series "Gladiators."

VERY interesting, we find from Bob yesterday that the private
detectives Fashnau used were cult of scientology connected!
Now we find that Fashnau is into other frauds (attached).
The picture of cult involvement in nigeria's missing billions is forming rather well it seems... any cult businessmen involved will go down and may take the cult with them.
