[I] Happened to be given a copy of International Scientology News, issue 6 (featuring the 1998 New Years event), and since reposts are popular with our friend publicrelations@scientology.org, I thought I'd remind us all of some of the glaring lies published in this - an official magazine published by the Church of Scientology International.
It says Narconon has 12 centers in Sweden, while http://www.narconon.a.se lists 3 - Esloev, Huddinge and Knutby - and two offices in Gothenburg and Vaesteraas which only do information and are not rehab centers.
Where are the other 9 (or to be generous, 7)?
Who in Int PR office can't do primary school aritmetic?
Sweden is described as a country where every 9 minutes, someone dies of a drug overdose. That makes 160 persons per day, 58 400 per year. According to our National Statistics Office, Sweden had a population of 8 844 499 in the year 1996. There were 94 133 deaths in total. Did 58 400 persons out of 94 133 die from a drug overdose? Causes of death are listed in the Yearbook of Health and Medical Care 1998, http://www.sos.se/fulltext/9846-001/9846-001.htm (figures from 1996)
illness in the circulatory system (heart, etc): 45 863
tumors: 21 482
respiratory illnesses: 7 838
injuries and poisoning: 4 203
There were 1 253 suicides (the majority in the 45-64 age group), and 410 cases where it could not be determined if death was suicide or an accident.
Graphs at http://www.sos.se/fulltext/9846-001/9846d17.htm show the number of deaths (taking into account multiple causes of death, that is also counting those who had other conditions contributing to death ) related to drug addiction to be almost 5.5 persons per 100 000 inhabitants, which makes about 486 drug addiction related deaths.
486 as opposed to the claimed 58 400.
(I won't even go into other lies or half truths in this article, or how on the video tape from this event you falsely claimed that the King and Queen of Sweden personally support Narconon, which caused a big scandal here.)
The question is: what other lies did the CoS print in this 48-page publication? How will CoS members know what information to trust, if such obvious falsehoods can be so easily be pointed out in their own magazine?

>Hello Catarina;
>Well done! Every time the CofS puts out some promo, they better learn

Thanks. It's sad though that many CoS members seem to swallow all this BS. Finding falsehoods in this little Narconon article didn't exactly require 'skilled research'. Obviously, those who manufacture this stuff still feel very confident that CoS members are not going to see through the lies, or if they do, that they won't raise any fuss about it. And *that* says a lof of what kind of organization we're dealing with here.
