Forwarded to me in email. Camberwell Markets is a flea market held in a carpark every Sunday morning. This is referring to last Sunday, 11th March;
I was ill so didn't make it there Sunday 18th to see if they were back again.
The text below has been changed to disguise the writing style.
=====
It seems that Narconon has moved into Camberwell. I was at the Camberwell
Markets on Sunday, and they had a stall set up. It was staffed by a pair of
middle aged and somewhat shabby-looking men: a slightly overweight fellow
with a mild speech handicap, and a smaller man who left as I got closer to
the stall.
I spoke with the larger man for about five minutes about Narconon and received the usual talk, that it is a physical therapy and mental training regime with vitamins. I asked what the vitamins were for; it was explained that heroin strips the body of the vitamins, which need to be replaced; as well as removing myelin from nerve fibres, which also needs to be replaced.
I was also told that drugs are stored in the fat cells. (Later I wished I had asked how heroin strips myelin - a form of fat - but is stored in fat cells.) I was also told that there were many independent studies showing the effectiveness of the program. I asked for some references, which seemed to confuse the man running the stall. I got across to him eventualy that I wanted citations to medical journals; he admitted he didn't have any, but he could get me some later. I decided not to, as I did not wish to leave my personal details with Scientology.
I asked whether Narconon was affiliated with Scientology, and was told that, apart from sharing Hubbard literature, they were not. I asked whether Narconon was affiliated with Narcanon, and was told that they were not. I don't think that I made a friend by asking.
I took some leaflets. I believe that they have set up shop on Camberwell Road opposite the Rivoli theatre, set up, either in connection with or over the hall from an acupuncture/qi gong/natural medicine practitioner.
=====
It is interesting to note that Scientology *used* to have a mission on the
2nd floor of 235 Camberwell Road (listed in 'What Is Scientology?' 1993),
which now appears to be a dentist's office; I'm wondering if it's the same
place. (I used to live around there but don't now.)
