I wrote the principal, Dr. Scott Wilbur: Dr. Wilbur,

I am writing to you because of a piece I read in the Easyreader website. In part, the article stated, "A free workshop for parents will take place 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Mira Costa High School in Room 200. Certified chemical dependency counselor Daphna Hernandez of the Narconon program will counsel parents on how to identify and deal with possible drug habits of their children. Teenagers are also welcomed."

Narconon is not accredited by the state, nor are their counselors certified outside of the Narconon milieu. Recently, Narconon's drug education program was reviewed by by a panel of experts who dismissed the program as being misleading and scientifically innacurate. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/10/02/BAGN292LAC1.DTL

As a result of this decision, public schools in San Francisco and Los Angeles have dropped the Narconon program. Narconon is a front group for the "church" of Scientology. It promotes founder L. Ron Hubbard's teachings under the guise of drug education.

I suggest you research this group further before allowing them to present their material on your campus. http://stop-narconon.org is a well researched and well documented site by Dr. Dave Touretzsky, a research scientist at Carnegie Mellon university.
