Here's a chance to help keep Narconon from invading another community. They're trying to get a permit to open a new facility in Leona Valley, outside Los Angeles. Two recent stories appeared in the Los Angeles Daily News. Highlight:
Sam Dea, supervising county regional planner, said Narconon Southern California was also asked to hold open houses and meet with the Leona Valley Town Council on a regular basis to provide information about the center to residents.
So it's not too late to stop this. Please, help us to contact members of the town council and the county Regional Planning Commission. Tell them that Narconon is dangerous quackery, a ripoff, and a cult recruiting operation. Tell them Narconon is banned from the San Francisco and Los Angeles Unified School Districts. Send them to Stop-Narconon.org and Narconon-Exposed.org. Let them HEAR FROM YOU, and let's get 2006 off to a properly suppressive start.
Write to the town council:

The next meeting of the Leona Valley Town Council is February 9. Let's make sure these folks have all the information they need. The final decision is made by the regional planning commission, so we need to educate them too, and let them know that people will be watching their decision.

The ARSCC(wdne) elves are on the case! Here's a very interesting
document they turned up from the regional planning commission
concerning Narconon's application:
http://planning.co.la.ca.us/CUP04_023_stf_rpt.pdf
And here's some background info on the town of Leona Valley, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles:

http://www.theav.org/leonavalley/index.htm
The town doesn't want Narconon setting up shop there. Let's help the Regional Planning Commission find the justification they need to turn down this application.

Here is the Narconon of Southern California conditional use permit for
Leona Valley. Guess who owns the property? It's not Narconon, and
it's not ABLE. It's Church of Scientology Religious Trust!
http://planning.co.la.ca.us/CUP04_023_fact.pdf
The planning commission's next meeting is January 11, but Narconon is not scheduled to be discussed there:
http://planning.co.la.ca.us/drp_rpc1.html
The commission should understand that Narconon:
* makes fraudulent claims about success rates http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Narconon/doesitwork.htm
* promotes medically dangerous "treatments" http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Narconon/safety.htm
* is a lousy neighbor and commits endless zoning violations: http://stop-narconon.org/Newport-Beach/
* engages in many other kinds of fraud: http://stop-narconon.org/Documents
* physically and mentally abuses its clients: http://stop-narconon.org/Personal
Let the planning commission know that there are good reasons for listening to the Leona Valley town council and rejecting Narconon's application.

The newspaper article by Sue Doyle says:
Savage is expected to attend the Leona Valley Town Council's next meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9. The council meets at the Leona Valley Improvement Association Community Building, 8367 Elizabeth Lake Road.http://www.dailynews.com/santaclarita/ci_3371905
I suppose that "Feb" could be a typo.
Anyway, the town council is already objecting to Narconon's application. The problem now is the regional planning commission.
California recently passed more stringent staffing requirements for rehab facilities; based on the number of clients, they have to have a certain number of certified staff with specific training. Narconons are mostly staffed by their own recent graduates (i.e., ex-druggies), many of whom have no academic degree, or even a high school diploma. They can't possibly be meeting the new staffing requirements, and that might be enough reason to reject the application.

You can fax the Leona Valley Town Council, if you get it to the local
office of 5th District LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, no
later than mid-day Monday (Jan 9th) at 661-942-5069.
The next town council meeting is scheduled for 7:30 that evening.
The town council is already opposed to the Narconon facility opening in their area, but they need better ammunition to support their arguments. Let's give them some.
Fax your polite letter to 661-942-5069, explaining why the people of Leona Valley should oppose the opening of a Narconon facility adjacent to their town. Include some URLs in your letter.
Note that the actual decision is made by the LA County Regional Planning Commission, but the town council does have input. And make sure Supervisor Antonovich understands that support of a Scientology-controlled drug rehab scam by *any* California politician will not go unnoticed.
By the way: it looks like the location for this proposed Narconon facility is the former site of Mace Kingley Ranch, the Scientology reform school for "troubled" kids, a.k.a. the "Little Ranch of Horrors". The property is currently owned by Church of Scientology Religious Trust.

Correction to my previous post: the Scientology school formerly
occupying the premises in Leona Valley was the Canyon Oaks Ranch, not
the Mace Kingsley Ranch.
Here's a post about the Canyon Oaks Ranch:
