Regarding Tilman Hausherr's interesting commentary in an earlier post about Narconon's click-link pay-offs, I did some investigating. I knew Narconon was corrupt, but I had no idea until I visited one of their sites:
www.stopaddiction.com . The video was almost sickening.
One thing I found particularly disturbing was this page: http://www.stopaddiction.com/narconon_science.html It quotes:
W. Kent McGregor, M.S.W., A.C.S.W.
Mr. McGregor received his B.S. in psychotropic pharmacology and drug interactions and his Masters of Social Work from (etc., snip.) There's lots more. I thought if anything "psychotropic" was taboo. That page lists numerous "questionable" PhDs, etc. A worthy read-through.
What struck me as being particularly odd, however, was the video: http://www.stopaddiction.com/video/Success4.wmv
Any "professional" drug/alcohol organization should NEVER, EVER videotape their patients, let alone put them on the web. These people are "fresh out of detox" and are willing to say anything. They've been there for weeks and are willing to say anything, with good intentions.
Their patients "feel better" because they've been forced to withdraw for weeks. Most addicts "feel better" once the withdraw effects wear off. That doesn't mean they're getting proper medical care while their body chemistry is changing in Narconon's "care." Certain drug withdraws can affect heart rate, blood sugar, Diabetes, and numerous other functions. How many deaths could have been avoided if only parents had been more aware of where they actually sent their kids.
I believe L Ron Hubbard hated psychiatry because he was afraid of being found out himself. God forbid someone learn the truth. From where I sit, it appears the entirety of Scientology is geared toward protecting itself, rather than helping anyone but itself.
Respectfully,
Brian James

Brian -I have communicated with several parents who have used the NarCONon facilities in hopes for help for an addicted family member. I have not heard from one yet who had successful treatment. If the truth is known, those on staff are former addicts that have been conned into joining the cult, do they stay clean? I do not know. Here is a story I read some time ago where a parent told her sad story which also mentioned a horrible accident involving members of the NarCONon staff in Watsonville, Ca.

My son has been in and out of Narconons ® over a 10 year period and still can't control his drug addiction. Now I know why. He has never been given any kind of adequate counseling and has been subjected to e-meters, OTs, mind control, and total loss of self.
I'm writing because he was in a serious car accident with some others from Narconon Northern CA where two were killed and his legs were crushed. He barely survived. (I only snipped a part of this mothers story)
. My sincere hope is that this young man is now home and able to live a normal life. When I hear this kind of a story and realize there is so little I can do to help --it is so painful and so frustrating.

In actual practice you safeguard the group by removing or isolating the individual. Then you see what can be done for the individual to rehab him without endangering the group in any way.

HCO POLICY LETTER OF 7 DECEMBER 1969
Here's a name Narconon doesn't want you to know -
LAURA HIPPE
Look her up on the Internet Movie Database at http://www.imdb.com
Laura taught actors including Damon Wayans and was my girlfriend at one point. She was, in $cientology terms, an "OT 3."
The longer she was involved in $cientology, the more her acting career declined.
Normally I don't want my posts archived by Google but in this case I'll let 'em because this should go on record.
Apparently, every time a boyfriend of hers discovered she was an alcoholic and left her over it, Laura would try to kill herself. She tried that when I was going to leave her. I saved her just in time and stayed up with her 36 hours straight making sure she made it through a nightmare called L.A. County General. (She didn't have any money or medical insurance and was behind in her income taxes, all of which had to do with $cientology influence, so she couldn't afford a better hospital.)
After that incident, Laura decided to try to beat her alcoholism. All the $cientology auditing and "Operating Thetan" super-secret "levels of awareness" didn't cure her alcoholism, neither did training to be a "Class IV auditor" ($cientology's version of a counselor).
So Laura got into the Narconon program.
Laura also began working with a $cientology "ethics counselor" named Robert Wiseman, who was the brother of $cientology spokesperson Bruce Wiseman. This same Robert Wiseman stole $10,000 from a European immigrant who had struggled 10 years to save the money, but I didn't know that at the time. Later, when I was sharing a house with former $cientology executive Henning Heldt, his wife Mary, daughter Letty, Wiseman and another person (big house) I learned that Wiseman was a liar and a thief.
One night I drove to Laura's house to pick up something (a book of mine I think she had) and I saw the coroner's van outside. Robert Wiseman met me at the door and told me that Laura had killed herself.
There was a $cientology internal investigation and a "Committee of Evidence" about the suicide. The chairman told me that I had nothing to do with her death. Naturally, I knew that, but I guess the uber-control people of $cientology felt I needed to know that. The Hollywood Police Department did an investigation and determined it was a suicide.
Shortly thereafter, Robert Wiseman left L.A. and was never seen again.
So much for $cientology "ethics."
So much for "OT levels."
So much for $cientology "counselor training."
So much for NarCONon.
Hope you're toasting in hell, Hubbard.
