Monday Oct 21 Gregg and I went out to Mormora. We didn't get there in time for the city counsel meeting, but we did find the local opposition to Narconon moving into their town in a nearby coffee shop. We talked to them for about an hour. It seems the Reeve (Mayor most places) has had enough contact with scientology that he may be under the spell or just plain blackmailed by what he told them when being audited. Scientology (Narconon) is going to have opposition moving into that town. The locals report that the properties, two motels and a farm were bought with large stacks of cash.
Incidentally, last week Gregg called at the Narconon number in Marmora. It is 613-472-3744, and is also the number for the Trelawney Motel, one of two Scientology/Narconon has bought there. The other being the Bella Vista Motel a mile or two further away from town. He reached Penny Luthra who said she was in charge.
Penny claimed not to be a Scientologist. Considering the flexible definition of "member" that is possibly even true. Her father, Devinder Luthra (who dresses like a Sekh except for the haircut) I have seen going to the birthday event in Toronto and is otherwise deeply involved--scientologist or not.
I think the fronts denying they are with scientology may become more common. Even scientologists know scientology has a terrible reputation but even denying it for Narconon alerts people.
Penny mentioned to Gregg that she knew nothing of the various studies that have declared Narconon worthless, that they were licensed and pay for the "processes" out of Narconon in the US, that her father had sunk a bunch of money into Narconon as an investment for her and that she expected to make money from it.
This will be interesting to watch because I think certain government officials here will interested in people "investing" with an expectation of return in a charity.
On our way back to Toronto about ten pm we decided to take a look at the two motels Narconon has bought.
Both motels have the usual semi circular driveways. The Trelawney was on the right side and we turned into the far entrance and drove around without stopping. Gregg saw a young man and a young woman peeking out from behind the curtains. He recognized them both as being scientologists from Toronto. The woman was one of them at the store front they rented some months ago, but not the one with the horrible teeth. We got a license or two which have not yet been run (the government computers have been down).
We went on around the driveway and came back out on the road. About a mile or two down the road is the Bella Vista. Got one more license number there and left for Oakville.
The meeting for the 28th will be at their proposed location and will not be open to those opposing Narconon moving in.
