In a posting on October 2, 2004, I stated that the Narconon Drug Education Program "has now been flatly rejected by the California Department of Education." That is incorrect. I confused one government task force investigating Narconon with another.

The program HAS been flatly rejected, but it was by the task force set up by the San Francisco Unified School District. The details of that repudiation are given in Nanette Asimov's October 2 piece in the San Francisco Chronicle, which was posted to ARS. You can read it here:

The California Department of Education has its own task force that is evaluating the Narconon Drug Education Program. That task force was supposed to issue its report this month, but it has been unable to even begin its work because Narconon has not supplied it with materials on its program. Other folks, including Chris Owen, author of the Narcnon Exposed web site, have been all too happy to supply information to the task force about the garbage that Narconon teaches kids. But the state quite reasonably wants Narconon to officially submit its stuff for consideration before they rule on it.

Is Clark Carr, the potentially violent head of Narconon International, deliberately withholding this material to forestall ANOTHER public humiliation of Narconon? (This is the man who told the Chronicle's Nanette Asimov he wants to punch me in the nose.) He can stall for a little while, but in the end, the outcome will be the same.

Narconon will soon be finished in California. The only way Narconon speakers will be appearing again in California public schools is if they sneak into individual classrooms under the radar of school administrators. And we're going to do our best to see that this doesn't happen.
