NARCONON RECOGNIZED BY THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT?
Some time ago I sent an email to the European Parliament informations officer in Copenhagen (there is one in every E.U. capital), and asked for confirmation on whether or not the E.P. had recognized L. Ron Hubbards succesfull drub rehab technology and Narconon in a 1988 resolution.
It took the informations officer some time to reply, maybe because he really had to look hard for such a resolution, but he finally replied with the following words:
"I can inform you, that I have not found one single E.P. document, which in any way supports the theories of the Church of Scientology".
This is significant because the danish (1998) edition of "What is Scientology?" says otherwise; that Narconon / LRH drug rehab tech. has been recognized by the E.P. in a 1988 resolution (apx. 10 pages into the chapter about Narconon). (i)
In the english (1998) edition of "What is Scientology?" you may be astounded to find that Narconon has been recognized by the "European Parliament". The "European Parliament" and "The European Council" are two entirely different and unconnected organisations. So, which is it?
SLOPPY TRANSLATION
Since CofS publications are translated by org-staffers, probably with only little or no professional training, you'll now and again find both bad grammar, unusual wordings and plain falsehoods (such as the recognition by the European Parliament) in the translated works. So while it's simply not true that Narconon has been recognized by the European Parliament, it's probably not an intentional lie - but it's a non-fact printed due to amateurism.
BUT IT'S STILL NOT TRUE
The english original of What is scientology? Claims that "The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized the success of L. Ron Hubbard's drug rehabilitation technology and Narconon in a resolution passed in January 1988." (ii) This is simply not true, since none of the 22 resolutions (iii) and only one of the 24 recommendations (iv) of 1988 is dealing with drug issues (and does not mention Narconon nor Hubbard). What exists though, is a motion for a resolution (v) from 1988, which due to it's nature is only proof of support from the undersigned - not the European Parliament.
