sbragen asked this question on 4/12/2000:
Is it true that if your mother is Irish and your father is Italian that the children from this marriage cannot be in the mafia?
nizami gave this response on 4/12/2000:
They can be associates of the family, but not "made" members. It's like in the movie "Donnie Brasco"- a friend of mine vs. a friend of ours.
sbragen asked this follow-up question on 4/12/2000:
Associates meaning they know the business of the mafia? Also, is the mafia "just a business"?
nizami gave this response on 4/12/2000:
Associates are usually involved in some small part of the business, like auto thefts, or other "minor" crimes. They're usually the foot soldiers, the lowest rung on the ladder. The mob is not "just a business;" rather, it's a major criminal endeavor, with their hands in virtually every legitimate (and illegitimate) business. Since the FBI started cracking down on the Italian Mafia under the RICO Act in the 1980s, the influence of the Mafia in most major cities has dwindled to great degree, such that former mobsters have to go out and get real jobs.
