When people have traumatic childhoods they may repress part of the memories.... because they are too painful to remember. There are many different types of dissociative disorders. For a mild type there may be memory but the feelings that go with the memory have been walled off....i.e. they don't feel anything about it. At the other end of the continuum is multiple personality disorder where the dissociation has caused multiple personalities to form.... often the age of the different personalities are related to age of traumas.
