JPeepers asked this question on 4/22/2000:
Can you give me some information on Borderline Personality Disorder? I have been told by many therapists that my mother most likely suffers from it. One suggested that she may be Borderline Scitzophrenic. Is that different?
She has been under Psychiatric care for many years when I was growing up and has been again for the past 6-7 years. (I'm 38 years old) My Dad only says that the Psychiatrist told him that she would never get better.
As you can imagine, my sisters and I are all in therapy but struggle with what happened to her and why she won't get better. After having my own children, it's very hard to understand how someone can treat their children the way she did and still does.
Thank You.

I do not believe there is a diagnosis of a Borderline Schizophrenia. However, a person can have a Personality Disorder and Schizophrenia as well. My suspicion is that your mother has been diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia, characterized by delusional thinking, auditory and/or visual hallucinations among many diagnostic criteria.Since this is one of the major and most devastating of mental disorders this diagnosis is not made without exact criteria being met. These people suffer an internal Hell we can not phathom. I do not agree that she "will not get better". Cured,no,but improved, certainly.Symptoms can be controlled. There have been gigantic strides in the anti-psychotics available now.All family members must have an understanding of this disease in order to assist the family member and minimize the traumatic effect on family members. Borderline Personality can be of many types and is more manageable and less obvious (in most cases). Seek another opinion.Your mother cannot be held responsible for some of her behaviors. Please let me know more about her case as I have a good knowledge base of treatment and crisis intervention. Good Luck and write back. I need to know date of onset(age diagnosed) and past and current therapies.
