The Bible: a Worthless Guide to Sexual Conduct

By Larry Sites

I just got the new issue of The American Rationalist, the Alternative to Religious Superstition and it was full of related articles. In "The Bible: a Worthless Guide to Sexual Conduct" by Alex Simpson, shows how the NT prohibits adultry, which includes desire, and concludes that only abstainance will get one to heaven. He then points out the hyprocrasy of christians that claim that god abhors homosexuality when it is obvious that god abhors ALL sex. He then makes a case for legalized prostitution, pointing out that ONLY 3% of stds in the us are spread by prostitution and notes that women engaged in LEGAL prostitution have lower rates than the general population. All the laws that prohibit consentual adult sex are attributable to absurd bible dogma. These laws, based on religious fanaticism, violate the seperation of church and state; waste money; and ruin lives.

Another article, "What about that Ol' Time Religion- and its Family Values?" by Bernard Katz, points out that while our constitution prohibits NATIONAL churches, STATES were free to establish STATE churches and some did so untill the 2nd third of the 19th century. To see the effect of todays cry to return to government promotion of "family values" one only has to look at the track record of those state churches. He does and lists many examples. It ain't anything to be proud of or desire a return to. Yankee peddlers and snake-oil salesmen were one of the infamious products of "family value" states. Child labor, female exploitation, slavery, swindling, drinking, gambling, tobacco chewing, etc were all much WORSE under "family value" control than today.

Christianity, and religious superstition in general, is responsible for most of the worlds problems, from overpopulation to wars, even thought is is incorrectly attributed with being somehow a universal good. It's time we improved this planet by opposing ignorance and superstition.
