Gallup, NM - State highway officials see no reason to rename U.S. 666, despite objections that the number refers to the Antichrist in the Bible. The State Highway Comminsion tabled a request for guidance on studying the name change for the highway that runs from Gallup to Cortez, CO, then north to Monticello, UT. The issue arose after an Indiana man wrote one of his U.S. senators, questioning why New Mexico didn't change the highway's name. The highway was named in 1926. The second and third digits of the designation show the highway was a branch of the famed, and now defunct, Route 66, while the other 6 was used to show the road was the sixth branch of U.S. 66 to be designated.
