Gov. Fob James

P. 2A, _Baltimore Sun_, 4/29/98:

Gov. Fob James apologized for using profanity to describe the state's new `moment of silence' law, which James signed but belittled for not allowing vocal prayer in public schools.

"James said he thought he was speaking privately when he told the sponsor, state Rep. Perry Hooper, Jr., that the law "ain't worth the damn paper it's written on," then used a vulgar word for excrement: "Shit." A local television station recorded his words.

Later, James apologized "for using a slang word in what I thought was a private conversation between two gentlemen."
