THE EFFECTS OF ABUSE
What are the effects of domestic abuse on women?
Some of the effects women suffer include feelings of helplessness, fear, anger, depression, shame, isolation, and low self-worth. Apart from the direct injuries caused by an assault, long-term physical effects include fatigue, body aches, headaches, and tension.
What are the effects on men who abuse?
Since men are usually the aggressors in domestic abuse, it may seem they escape its negative effects. This is not true. Men who abuse destroy the quality of both their family life and relationships by destroying trust and instilling fear in their partners and children.
What are the effects on children?
Children are always affected by witnessing or hearing domestic abuse. They often feel scared, anxious, angry, and responsible for the abuse. Witnessing abuse interferes with children's ability both to learn in school and to form healthy relationships. From abusive role models, children are conditioned either to abuse or to be abused.
