Hi folks. I'm an expert from the relationships page, and I need information on how to find Women's Shelters in various parts of USA, Canada, Britain, etc. Site addresses or phone no.s please. Would love it if anyone knew national registries, if they exist. The wider reaching, the better. Also, the sooner the better. Thanks. See you on our expert bulletin board once it gets up and running.

There are only a few where I live (Anchorage) which is too bad because there is a need for more. They fill up fast. There is one main one, The Awaic Shelter, but there is also Claire House, The Salvation Army, places like that. There is so much alcohol abuse up here that it's ridiculous, and of course many times that leads to violence. Lots of it isn't even documented because it happens on the street, with the drunks, etc...
AskRawgod asked this follow-up question on 4/23/2000:
Thank you, and nice to hear from Alaska. Do you know if these are part of the National Registry, or do they ignore the 49th state?
Is there any active work going on up there, or is it virtually an accepted way of life?
Just curious.

I have no idea, I know that the AWAIC shelter is the biggest one here, that's the only one you hear about anyway. What do you mean by "active work"?
AskRawgod asked this follow-up question on 4/23/2000:
Sorry, Shar
I should have been more specific. I was wondering if there are any community projects, private organizations combatting this endemic disease, abuse. My question about the registry was just wondering if the contiguous 48 states recognize you folks up there in the midnight sun, nothing more. I know here in Canada we tend to forget about our brothers and sisters in the frozen north, and I was curious about similarities between our cultures.
Definitely, we both have the abuse problem.
Thanks again,
Jerry

Actually I just looked in the yellow pages and the only shelter for women that's listed is the AWAIC one, I guess that says something about the mindset of my town, huh? Much of the abuse that goes on here is due to alcohol and it occurs on the streets. Many people, mostly the natives, are homeless and they drink LOTS and end up beating each other quite a bit. They go to the Brother Francis Shelter to sleep it off but that's just a shelter for the homeless, not anything to do with abuse. Also, in the military there seems to be a ton of domestic violence, they keep it quiet though. It's something that happens but no one talks about it, if you know what I mean. I live on the army post and it's not all perfect like they make it sound... Sharon
