Hi folks. I'm an expert from the relationships page, and I need information on how to find Women's Shelters in various parts of USA, Canada, Britain, etc. Site addresses or phone no.s please. Would love it if anyone knew national registries, if they exist. The wider reaching, the better. Also, the sooner the better. Thanks. See you on our expert bulletin board once it gets up and running.

There are a miriad of shelters and clinics within the US and Canada. I am developing a list of these in an area-by-area basis. There are so many of these simply because there are so many abused and abusers! I have spent many hours compulating these and I have had help as well. The shear numbers of shelters is overwhelming.
But, what is just as overwhelming is the fact that the vast majority of victims do not seek help! I would be happy to share my resources with you if you have any specific areas in mind.
There is one national number I can refer you to: (800) 799-7233. However, the best bet is to call the local Health and Welfare office. The majority of these will have a listing of local hot-lines.
I don't believe that there are any listings at all for the actual shelters. These are, for good reason, kept secret. Anyone contacting a hot-line will be given a three to five minute "intake" interview. This is to determine where the referal should go. It is, also, to feret out any abuser who is simply trying to find the shelters. The often have a female friend pose as a victim to get this information.
Again, if you have a specific area in mind, I'd be happy to send hot-line information to you.

Since this is a very unique area, and many victims are not ready to contact a hot-line, please consider refering them to this Violence and Abuse page. We have some very experienced experts in this unique area who can provide some very real direction for these victims.
Thanks,
William

Thanks WW,
The one thing you did not give me was a way to contact you for a quick reply. I hope I will never need to do this, but it is possible.
At this moment I don't have a specific area in mind. But if I could have had such a contact at my fingertips last night it might have helped, but I didn't, and I don't know what happened to the respondee who needed that info, LAST NIGHT!
About your advice to refer these seekers to your board, I had already come to that conclusion. Unfortunately before last night I had never had occasion to come to your board, so I had no idea just how good and plentiful your resources are there. Now I know, I just hope it is not too late.
Anyways, if you could give me a contact number or website to reach you at in a hurry I would really appreciate it.
Also, with all your info, I think you and tcsmpi ought to contact one another. He already has one domestic violence website up and running, and he said he is getting up another as we speak. I would love to see this second website as a world registry, if I can be so bold to dream...

I'm afraid that I would have to link up with others to create a world registry. That is some task. However, a task well worth doing.
I can be reached at my e-mail address which is: wwnelsonfive11@aol.com. I'd be happy to help you with any specific references that you need. We have not set up a website yet but that also is in the works.
Our research is not just for the violence and abuse, but also for sexual abuse, both for the victims and the abusers.
If I can be of any further help, please contact me via e-mail. I can respond faster that way.
Thanks for your concern for others,
William
AskRawgod asked this follow-up question on 4/17/2000:
Thank you, William, for all you are offering. I hope it's "if you can ever help me," not "when". And thank you for your email address, I too prefer contact in that manner. Tcsmpsi mentioned he might like to collaborate at some level with you, but he is going to wait for you to contact him, from what I understand. I also am, hopefully, about to receive a large list of contacts to shelters, and I have asked that person if I can pass that information onto you and the others. I hope he allows me to do that, it can only be to everyone's benefit, especially the respondees, the ones we are all here for.
Anyway, time to carry on with my life for now. See you on the bulletin board, if and when management gets it up and running.
Thank you again,
jerry

I would indeed like to recieve that long list of shelters. I certainly could use the help. When you receive the list could you e-mail a copy to me? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
William
