Labugana asked this question on 3/21/2000:
In the last few years I have noticed that men have become abusive towards women. It is not only in one race but in all. What is the explanation of this behavior?
Artemidoros gave this response on 3/24/2000:
It is not sure whether this is true or not. It might be a biased impression. We can just be aware of the cases that are denounced or registered. There is indeed an increase of these cases. This is also related to the fact that women speak up more easily the last years. There is a general effort made by women's, non-govenemental and scientific associations to make the public more sensitive to this issue. The climate thus created encourages women to sue their abusers. If we could deduce a frank increase in womens' abuse, causes should be sought in contemporary way of life and society.Violence against women is, to my opinion, a function of the overall violence in a given society. It is also a function of the satus of women but this factor has rather been improved in all but the muslim and eastern european countries. The overall violence in a society is difficult to evalue because of the dark figure involved in such statistics. As a general consideration: Family disruption, social precarity, social antagonism, unemployment, stressful life conditions, agressive or immoral values, alcohol and cocaine abuse favorize relational violence and consequently womens'abuse. Some of these factors have been deteriorated these last years, some have been improved. To which degree each? What is the proportional impact of each of them on womens' abuse? Is there a real increase in the number of cases of abuses or is this registered increase a buffer or dark figure effect? This is to answer one question with many questions!
