Labugana asked this question on 3/21/2000:
In the last few years I have noticed that men have become abusive towards women. It is not only in one race but in all. What is the explanation of this behavior?

Violence has been around a long time. Domestic violence is all about power and control. The perpetrator (abuser) is the one with the problem and he maintains control over his victim who feels powerless. I must add that while most victims are women and most perps are men, the opposite does happen, i.e. women do abuse men. However, the statistics on that are skewed (because men don't report as often as women for one thing). I think violence has become much more visible in the past 5-10 years because of several things. Media is one, awareness is another, and we've seen an outbreak of so much violence in the schools across this country. One thing is clear, no one deserves to be battered, emotionally, physically, or otherwise. If we as a society don't begin to instill this in our children, we will see even more violence in the future. There are lots of resources out there about violence. I'd encourage you to search the web and your local library to find out more information. Thank you for being concerned and asking your question. Take care-- courtneysmom
