I would hire a lawyer to represent me two-fold. (1) to get the person who hurt me, to pay my medical expenses and compensate me for disabling me. (2) represent me in getting disability form social security. Getting social security benefits, is not an easy process, but here are a few hints that might help. (a) get copies of all medical records to include emergency room visits, doctors office visits, all tests that were preformed. (b) get family doctor to write a letter explaining why you are in his/her professional opinion diabled and how long he/she feels you will be disabled. Legal aide will provide a lawyer free of charge. Family servces may be able to help you with medical assistance, food stamps, and maybe some money if you have children. Apply for supplimental social security benefits. You ususally can apply for and do an interview with them over the phone. SSI is the short name for this program. It differs from social security in the aspect that you get SSI based on the income level for your house. A good program that usually doesn't take as long as social security disability to process. It will help bridge the gap so to speek till you become eligable for disability. I hope this information will be helpful to you.
