Can someone tell me, when did school violence first begin and in what city or state? I am writing a research paper and need some history.

I'm not sure if you mean when did it first start, like years and years ago, or if you're referring to the most recent tragedies that have occurred, i.e. "Pearl Mississippi, Jonesboro, AR, and Columbine, etc". Whichever the case, I'm sure you can find lots of info on the internet. Search for School Violence and you will get tons of info for your paper. Other experts here have given you other good tips also! Can I ask you to do something for me? Please include in your paper the overwhelming need for professional intervention for troubled kids in our school systems. I am a licsenced clinical social worker and I firmly believe if children had access to social work services in the schools that some of these problems could be addressed. Some schools have social workers, but not nearly enough. School counselors are not social workers and usually address career issues with school students. Teachers are not social workers either, they are there to teach. Parents are the ultimate choice to help their kids, but for those who don't or can't, we need professional people in the schools to ensure these kids are getting screened for violence, abuse, etc. Only social workers are trained in all these areas. There are many reasons why kids become violent. Some seek attention, some feel like outcasts and want to get back at others for what they felt like was mistreatment of them, some are abused or neglected, some have extreme anger boiling inside for various reasons, some feel the need for "power", some are anti-social. The list goes on and on and on.

In our state, we are trying to get it mandated that there is a social worker available in all schools. We have much work to be done, but at least we are trying. I'm not at all saying that having social workers in schools would end the violence, I'm saying it would make good use of our professional expertise and it surely couldn't hurt anything and only makes good sense. I didn't mean to get carried away, but I am passionate about this issue and think it could add a lot to your paper if you included the need for us to have professionals available in our schools.
