An old roommate owes my money and I really need it. If I cast a spell to induce it to give it to me is that violating the principle of free will?

Well, you've just answered your own question. :) I've found that whenever I've felt the need to ask someone else if they think a certain spell is appropriate, it's my 'inner' way of saying that is not. Personally, yes, I would say that to cast that spell would be a violation of his/her free will...instead, you could try what I call an 'open your eyes' spell. perhaps, for your purpose, on a Wednesday or Thursday charge some peppermint oil and place a drop or so on his wallet/her purse [watch for staining!]. you may want to do it during a waxing moon to help his/her awareness grow of his/her debt to you.

Also, someone before me suggested dropping subtle hints. That would probably be good also. :)
