We're told to ask permission from a tree or plant before, say, taking a branch from it for a tool or a spell. I understand that, but...how do you know if you've been *given* permission? Or if permission is denied?

Greetings Anonymous!
The simplest way I can explain this is to go upon the basis of "feelings."
Regardless of what religion people follow, everybody seems to have a sense of right and wrong. When you go to an area and you "ask permission," simply close your eyes and meditate upon the object you are asking permission from. If it feels wrong in any way, then it is wrong. If it feels right, then do it. Permission has been granted.
The thing you must remember is after you have taken a part from whatever object, you must leave some sort of a blessing as a thank you to the object and to the Earth. It has done you a favour, it is only right to return the favour.
