I was always taught that a true Neo-pagan is polytheistic, monotheistic, agnostic, and atheist, all rolled up into one paradoxical package. More often than not I have found this to be the case. What do you think guys?
Gwenivere gave this response on 2/8/2000:
Minerva,
I believe that Paganism is a polytheistic religion but I don't know about monotheistic (believing in one supreme being), agnostic (believing in no supreme being) or atheist (not believing in religion). We can't be monotheistic because we believe in the Goddess and God and many different pantheons, too. And we can't be agnostic because we obviously believe in supreme beings. And we also cannot be atheist because Paganism is a religion. That's just my 2 cents.

It's also monotheistic because "All Goddesses are but one Goddess" and the Goddess and the God are one. And even though it is a religion (for some, not all--some people adopt it as a lifestyle while keeping other religion), Pagans keep their feet on the ground and recognize the myths for what they are: myths (almost like atheism, which is the only one that does not believe in a god). Of course that means that, like the Agnostics (which say "there may be a god or maybe not"), we are open to both possibilities. It is the combination of these different perspectives in one (which is often seen) that creates the Paradox.
