CRY FOR THE CHILDREN

I was a VERY lucky child to be born into a middle-class income family that was tops in caring and loving. As a freshman in college, it was a MAJOR revelation to me to realize that many of my contemporaries did NOT have the same relationship that I had with two loving parents! My parents were my best friends and we had wonderful times together.

In the field of occult crime research, one fact stands out above the rest; the teens inolved in crimes with "occult overtones" ranging from petty vandalism to murder have a common denominator. The vast majority of them come from dysfunctional families. Time and time again, investigation reveals broken homes, substance abuse, spouse and/or child abuse, or neglect.

Hal Mansfield of United Campus Ministries in Ft. Collins, CO, recently spoke on the topic of cults to Colorado State University students. At one point, he related the story of a girl who sacrificed a chicken in the living room, then slashed her own wrists while her parents looked on. The family came to the UCM offices for counseling and the parents wanted to know if their daughter was "going through a phase"!

In 1985 on Long Island, Ricky Kasso and James Troiano stabbed Gary Lauwers to death in a fight over the theft of drugs. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, contemporaries of the three boys involved revealed that Lauwers (17 yr. old) was missing from his home for 4 days before parents reported his disappearance. What were these parents thinking? If I had been missing for 4 hours at that age, my parents would have beating the bushes.

Sean Sellers' parents were divorced and Sean was sent to live with a succession of reltives while his mother went on the road with his step father, a long distance truck driver. While living in Colorado with family members, Sean was arrested for petty theft, but this cry for help went unanswered.

Tommy Sullivan had several arguments with his mother, who, by all acounts, was a strict disciplinarian and expected him to meet exacting standards of bahavior. The tension in this family had reportedly been building for years.

Speakers Larry Zilliox and Kevin Murphy at the recent Cult Awareness Network conference in NY related accounts of parents who believed in "teens' right to privacy" and so never enered their rooms to see the Satanic altars or the drugs laying in plain site on the dresser. Nor did they see the trumoil in the lives of their children, nor take the time to TALK to them about their lives.

What kind of parents do we have now? Are they so involved with making money, buying fancy cars, summer homes and stereos that they have forgotten their responsibilities to their children? Too often it seems that all they can think of is to throw money at their children to keep them quiet. I thank all the Gods that I had two parents who loved me, talked to me, and LISTENED to me. Thank God/dess that I was allowed privacy, but taught that responsibility went with it.

I lost my mother, still one of my dearest friends, 4 days after Mother's Day this spring. We'd been through some wonderful times and some pretty bad ones too, but I'll never forget what she told me when I left home to go to college. As she hugged me goodbye, she said, "Remember, I may not always approve of what you do, but you're always my child and there's NOTHING you can do that will make me stop loving you. And you can ALWAYS come home." It's a sad fact that for so many of today's troubled teens who become involved in Satanism and gang activity, home is the LAST place they want to be.

WHAT IS RITUAL CRIME??

Over the past several years, there have been many discussions and many articles about the nature of ritual crime. What is it? How does one determine the distinction between crime that is committed in the process of a ritual and a crime committed for unrelated reasons? These are questions that must be answered before we can hope to have an understanding of true ritual crime.

The Religious Movement Resource Center uses three categories of motivation to make this determination. We offer these in hopes that you might also find them useful.

1) Ritual crime is associated with activities DURING a ritual or ceremony. It is inspired BY a religious doctrine or religious worship.

2) Religiously or politically motivated crime, however, is a crime that is not committed during a religious ceremony. It is the result of a religious or political doctrine.

3) Nonreligious/political crime occurs without dependence on any philosophy, doctrine or ceremony.

An example of RITUAL CRIME would be the following:

A group of three attempt to cast demons out a child during a worship service. They believe it is necessary to place burning candles in the ears of the child to drive out the demons. The candles burn down and cause second and third degree burns.

An eleven year old child is raped by a thirty year old man who believes that he may exert his power this way. He has read several books and believes this is necessary to complete his ritual. This is RITUAL CRIME.

In both cases, the activity is carried out during a ceremony or ritual. The group can be any size or it can be only one. Ritual crime can ba attributed to many belief systems and religions.

RELIGIOUSLY AND POLITICALLY MOTIVATED CRIME is of another nature. A man goes to church and hears his pastor talk about child discipline. "Spare the rod and spoil the child," the minister admonishes his congregation. He talks about rampant drug abuse and teenage rebellion. We must train up our children in the way of the Lord that they might not depart from it. Within a matter of weeks, several child abuse cases are filed with Child Protective Services and ultimately end up in criminal court.

On the other end of town, a well-known racist is talking to an assembly of followers. All minorities; Hispanics, Blacks, Jews and Asians are not real people -- they are mud people. They have no souls. Two racial skinheads leave that night and beat a Black man on the street. That is RELIGIOUSLY AND POLITICALLY MOTIVATED CRIME.

In the preceding examples, the crime was not committed during a ritual or service. Instead, it was a result of the TEACHINGS at a given service.

The third category, NONRELIGIOUS/POLITICAL CRIME, is the most common. A man robs a local 7-11. Upon his arrest, it is discovered that he has a history of criminal behavior. In addition to this, he is know to be a self-styled Satanist. This has no relation to his religion. It is a result of criminal tendency.

The aforementioned examples are condensed from a variety of cases on file at The Center. This is not meant to be a comprehensive report on ritual crime vs. non-ritual crime. It will provide, however, a basic ideas as to the differences.

Video: Dave Roever Presents - Exposing the Satanic Web

Dave Roever's Exposing the Satanic Web is aimed at warning today's youth about the dangers of Satanism with a straight forward presentation and very little "preaching". Seeral experts give their testimonials and / or findings from their research in interviews or while statistics, images of rock bands, "satanic" graffiti, and other stereotypical satanic images are being displayed. The experts that appear in the video are Ken McBride, former High Priest of Satan; Vicky Caldwell, Putnam County, FL sheriff's office; Chief Marvin Ivy, Stansfield, TX Police Dept.; Yvonne Peterson, founder of the EXODUS ; Dr. Bob Sloane, a psychologist who treats people involved with Satanism; and Basheer Ahmed, a Pakistani Psychiatrist. (In a phone interview with Karen Crump of Roever Communications, she explained that due to the controversy surrounding Satan's Underground, video footage of Lauren Stratford was not used although they did use many of her statistics.)

This video claims that Satanism is spreading among teenagers. Graffiti, music (eg. heavy metal-- Ozzy Ozbourne), and the lifestyles of some teenagers (eg. "punks") are cited as examples of satanic influences.

There are some very impressive sounding statistics including an estimate that there are "40,000 Satanists", "100,000" people involved in some area of the occult in the Dallas - Ft. Worth, TX area, and that "...85% of the teens in Western Europe and 40% of the kids in the United States have been exposed to hardcore Satanism".

The most intriguing of the experts is Ken McBride who claims to have been a Satanist for 7 years, 4 of those years as a High Priest of Satan. In the video he states "[they] summoned a demon for [my] baptism and initiation" and that "[he has] done it [himself] to other people." He also says "...I met with a Witch, a High Priest of the Wiccan craft, who said, `That's a problem that I've got right now. I don't have the power to go against what you were.' and `You people could light bonfires and never walk up to it. You could harp without pedals) / by Marcel Grandjany & Jane Weidensaul.

Chat in the context of Wicca, their beliefs were of the right-hand path, "[the] path they think to be right [good]." "Black Wiccans and [Black] Druids follow the left-hand path.")

Vicky Caldwell narrates a brief section in which teen cultists' drawings, some of which are sketches of heavy metal album covers, are shown. She also talks about animal mutilation cases.

News footage of Sean Sellers and Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker) is used to demonstrate that the self-styled satanists are the most dangerous.

Dr. Bob Sloane discusses stories of generational satanists and follows with a story of a 4 year old child and the child's drawings of a satanic sacrifice. Sloane says "Sexual abuse always precedes bloodletting."

Also in the video are interviews with a practitioner of Voudoun and a Louisiana "treater" that works mainly with candle magic.

The remainder of the video is devoted mainly to statistics and characteristics of satanists and satanism such as "...9 out of 10 satanists are into drugs", and allegations that heavy metal music often contains satanic influences, decapitation is often common in satanic rituals, the media has helped with occult influences through things such as music, Dungeons and Dragons, movies (e.g. Faces of Death) and television. Many symbols of satanism are shown, including 666 and the upside down pentagram. Satanic control (blackmail) of "new recruits" is said to be done with explicit photos of the recruit involved in sacrifice, sex, etc.; by involving the victim in sacrifices and in self mutilation. Satanic recruitment centers are said to be in high schools, military bases, and day care centers.

According to Dave Roever and other individuals in the video, there are several ways in which one can fight satanism. These ways include parents getting involved in the lives of their children, attending seminars on satanism, and for those already involved in satanism to escape and seek help.

Exposing the Satanic Web makes an attempt to present the "facts" about satanism without much of the Hollywood hype. Unfortunately, it falls short of its goal. Obvious problems with the video include the use of Lauren Stratford's statistics, and the lumping together of Wicca, Palo Mayombe, Voudoun, and Satanism. The logic behind the inclusion of these religions into one video seems to stem from the fact they are not of the traditional Judeo-Christian backgroung. Overall, the video was better than I thought it would be. If Roever Communications should attempt to make another film of this type, my suggestions to them would be to double-check the validity and credibility of their sources and to include more general information on the groups and religions they use to help illustrate their point; not just specific examples by people that may be distorting the actual purpose and/or beliefs of these groups.

NEWS FROM ENGLAND

The following news report is from the Independent, one of the United Kingdom National "qualities" of 1 June 1990:

CARE WORKERS "LED CHILDREN TO INVENT SEX ALLEGATIONS"

A CONFIDENTIAL report on alleged Satanic abuse of children in Nottinghamshire has accused social workers of leading children into making unfounded allegations.

The report, leaked to Central Television, details evidence from one child psychologist that "the disclosure procedures followed by social workers may well be doing positive harm to the young people they are questioning".

It finds no evidence of ritualistic abuse, which was described by children during interviews with social workers. It says that much of the evidence of alleged satanic abuse was merely a product of a suggestive questioning technique.

The conclusions of the report and the failure to publish its contents has provoked bitter resentment among the social workers who feel unable to argue with leaks from it.

A spokesman for NALGO, the union representing the social workers, said: "This report has been leaked to the press, yet our members have been unable to see it. They would welcome the outcome of the full report at the earliest time possible so that they can gain recourse."

The inquiry was set up last year after eight members of a family and a male friend were jailed for a total of 43 years in Britain's biggest child sex abuse case which resulted in 23 children, 18 from one family and all aged under 12, being taken into care.

As suspicions rose that the well documented abuse may have had ritual aspects to it, an inquiry was set up including three social work managers not involved in the case.

The inquiry team claims that after three months of therapy by social workers, one female child alleged acts of cannibalism and witnessing seven murders.

The submission of the team is that "the interviewing techniques deployed by social workers on her amounts to interrogation with pressure being gradually increased until answers are provided which social workers want to hear". Another member of the team claims: "The limited choice questions such as you killed three or thirty babies ...can be interpreted as a typical psychological ploy to induce confession."

The report adds that in one police interview a girl claimed she fabricated the whole story. All the information she had, she stated, had come from social workers who pressured her.

In the case of a young woman constantly questioned by one young woman, the team reports: "It is hard not to draw the conclusion that she will remain a highly confused individual in terms of what happened and what didn't... as a direct result of social work practice. Will she go through life believing she is a child abuser having participated in the killing and eating of babies?"

There have been increasing reports of children being ritually abused in bizarre ceremonies. In March, The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, said that seven of its teams had reported cases of children who had directly experienced such abuse.

UPDATE: OTO RAID

Some of the property seized has been recovered by court order. The returned property includes ritual daggers taken from Merkabah House.

The Berkeley Chief of Police has tendered his resignation.

The Berkeley Police Review Commission found that insufficient evidence had been presented for direct religious persecution to be sustained on a split 2 to 1 votes. The dissenting opinion was given at length. The Commission did find that the affidavit (hence the search warrant itself) and the performance of the search were tainted by religious prejudice.

O.T.O. and eight individual plaintiffs have filed a complaint with the City of Berkeley for damages in the aftermath of the raid.

Mr. Roper immediately recognized my name on the tag when we met at the break. "Vicki Copeland," he said," I know you."

"Jack Roper." Was my reply. I've got a LOT of your material in my files."

Roper later told the audience he began his studies with Silva Mind Control and went on to study of Hatha Yoga. He researched demonology and then later became a Born Again Christian.

He now claims to work with the DEA in Miami and says that there is a large connection between drug runners, voodoo, and Witchcraft. His information on Afro-Caribbean religions is fairly accurate. He's working with Rafael Martinez and Charles Wetli of the Dade County Medical Examiner's office and they are some of the REAL experts in this matter. He also claims to have worked with the Mid-West Gang Investigation Association and with the parents of the McMartin preschool children.

Among the sources of information that he recommends are the Sept. 1989 issue of the Minnesota Police Chief Magazine and Tom Wedge's book The Satan Hunter. Wedge's book , while it is not nearly as bad as it might be, is more than sufficiently bad to warrant alarm at anyone who would recommend it as serious research material.

Most of Roper's presentation consisted of slides and clips from videos on rock music, children's cartoons and horror flicks. He dwelt extensively on the various alphabets used by destructive cults, totally ignoring the fact that if the graffiti is any indication, most of the adolescents who become involved with Satanism can't even spell in ENGLISH, let alone in some strange, archaic alphabet. Some of the unusual alphabets he showed included shorthand and braille. (Does that mean he thinks that blind people and secretaries are really Satanists?) He also indicated that children from ritualistic child abuse cases are now using sign language . (Possible insinuation that hearing impaired folks are also involved with the cults?)

Among the drawings he exhibited was one he claims was done by a fourth grade kid. This may have been true, but if it was, the kid copied it out of a copyrighted coloring book published by Troubador Press of San Francisco. I have a copy of the coloring book in question and it's unmistakable the same picture.

According to Roper, the key theme in Satanism is power, and the common elements are secrecy, eclectic practices, and self-gratification and indulgence. He showed a film clip from an episode of "Friday the 13th, the T.V. Show" to illustrate how kids come by some of their ideas.

The next section was devoted to slides from a warehouse called "Worldwide Imports" in North Hollywood, CA. This warehouse specializes in "occult" materials. He showed slides of robes, candles, amulets, books, etc. According to Roper, Witches and Satanists have different intent, but the source of the power is the same. He also showed slides from a Fantasy Role Playing Convention which had such things as horror masks and pewter figurines for sale, and implied that such conventions were a good source of supply for Satanic Cults.

Among the books recommended by him were The Ultimate Evil by Maury Terry, The Satan Hunter by Tom Wedge, Cults That Kill by Larry Kahaner, Satanism, the Seduction of America's Youth by Bob Larson, Like Lambs to the Slaughter and The Beautiful Side of Evil both by Johanna Michaelson, The Devil's Web by Pat Pulling, The Edge of Evil by Jerry Johnston, a volume on the history of human sacrifice by Neville Drury, and William Bainbridge's Satan's Power on the Process Church of the Final Judgment.

Other books shown in slides were The 6th and 7th Books of Moses, The Book of the Beast, The Dictionary of Angels, Richard Cavendish's The Black Arts, The Book of Ceremonial Magick by Dr. Israel Regardie, and various comic books.

He talked about Aleister Crowley stating that Crowley's books were filled with the desecration of the Christian religion. He supposedly received a letter from an OTO leader in Berkeley who was unhappy with many of the things he was stating and who wrote, "Satan is an angel in good standing." Roper alleges that the OTO publishes a newsletter called "The Cloven Hoof" (which, in fact, is, or WAS, published by La Vey's Church of Satan). In the class of organized Satanists, he also included Dr. Michael Aquino, Charles Manson, and the Process Church.

Roper next showed a newsclip of what he purported was a ritual child abuse cult. In fact, this was an early Florida newscast on the Finders. Later news stories reported that the Finders were not in any way Satanic, and the children who were removed from custody were returned to the care of their mothers.

The next filmclip was from the film "Ghoulies" and was an attempt to illustrate infant sacrifice. This film, for those who haven't had it inflicted on you, has actual excerpts from the Gardnerian Book of Shadows, namely, the Circle casting, used out of context and in an entirely inappropriate manner.

Roper states that ritual child abuse includes isolation, sexual abuse, death threats, brainwashing, blackmail and desecration. He recommends the video "America's Best Kept Secret" as a valuable teaching tool. He claims that animal mutilations and thrill killings also are evidence of widespread cult activity.

The next piece of "evidence" was a dramatic reading done by Vincent Price. The piece concerned an ancient formula for summoning the devil, in which Mr. Price does his usual admirable job. Roper, however, claims that this proves that Price is a Satanist and a Demonologist. (I always thought he was an ACTOR!!)

The last section of Roper's presentation consisted of clips from various rock songs and videos, mostly garnered for shock value. The sound quality was so poor on most of the songs that I couldn't make out a word that was being said.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q.Larson - Are adults reaching out to kids?

A.Roper - Yes. The kids are being desensitized by heavy metal music and horror films.

Q.Doug- Aimes, Iowa P.D. - Whenever we present a program to a high school or church, we find that the programs just incite curiosity and get more kids involved than were involved previously. Bookstores indicate that sales of the Satanic Bible increase after one of the presentations.

A.Roper - Be sensitive to the kids and understand their subculture. Many of the kids today are turned away by the churches.

Larry Jones - There has to be a balance between information and inciting curiosity. The information should come from the parents. They are the ones we should be educating. The family is being destroyed. Educate the parents.

Larson - You have to take into account motive, environment, and structure. Our culture is pervaded with the occult and too many people are poopooing the problem, sensationalizing it and inciting curiosity.

Q.Rev. Rich Faste, Flint, MI - Have you had a problem with researching the occult? Is there a danger? What is the difference between high level and low level Satanists?

A.Roper - That depends on the maturity level of the person.

Larson - What are the terms for the different levels of Satanists in the hierarchy?

Roper - Experimental - Dabbler, Self-styled, i.e., Richard Ramirez, "The Night Stalker"

Traditional - i.e., La Vey & Acquino

Generational - organized and networking family groups

He also recommended a booklet entitled Ritual Crimes in America by Pat Pulling which is available from BADD. I looked at his copy of this book, it is composed of news clippings on accounts of ritualistic/Satanic crimes.

Q.Angela, Teen Challenge, Omaha, NE - This woman claimed that she had interviewed 2 children from a Satanist family, and the kids said that they had to murder a human being before they reached the age of 2 years. The kids said they had been given dolls to practice on and that they were trained with guns and knives. Ms. Murphy claimed that these children had been removed from the home by the authorities.

A.Roper commented on the need to be watchful for that he called "victim impersonators" who had no evidence, relatives who didn't know what was going on, and time gaps in their stories.

Q.Norman, San Diego, CA - He related a couple of runins with supposed Satanists, including one young skateboarder who had responded to his shouts to get out of the street by bashing him in the nose and saying "I live for Satan" before skating off down the street.

A.Roper related that you must evaluate the history and back-ground of these kids. Most are rebelling against their families, and love is a critical ingredient in dealing with them. In dealing with Witches and Satanists, you must use logical, loving arguments.

Q.(couldn't hear the name) L.A. Calif - What about backward masking?

THE TRUTH ABOUT LYLE RAPACKI

The Feb. 1988 issue of "File 18 Newsletter" carries the following notation," Lyle Rapacki is a valuable resource into the New Age and occult (also an ex-cop who wants to network). He has Crossroads Counseling Center, Flagstaff AZ." (File 18 Newsletter, , Feb. 1988. Art. 14, "Locals", p. 9)

Mr. Rapacki's booklet Satanism, The Not So New Problem, reads, "With training and experience as a sworn police officer and a background in political intelligence and analysis, Lyle understands the difficult and sensitive world of investigations.

"...post-graduate education, degrees, and credentials in medical psychology ... is a member of the faculty of the Arizona Supreme Court Continuing Education Division ("Satanism, the Not So New Problem", Lyle J. Rapacki, Second Edition, September 1988, p. iii)

These credentials sound impressive. However, CWR is in receipt of information on Mr. Rapacki which reveals the following:

In an Alaska Police Standards Council application for instructor certification, dated 7/21/89, Rapacki lists his college background as "Northern AZ. Univ. 60 hrs. Counseling Psychgology MA., Trinity Bible College, 35 hrs. Pastoral Counseling, M. Div., Northern AZ. Univ. 160 hrs. Political Science, B. S. " (Alaska Police Standards Council form F-9 APSC Instructor Certificate Application Dated 7-21-89. Signed by Lyle J. Rapacki) He does hold a B. S. in political science from N. AZ Univ. He does NOT hold a M. A. nor a M. Div. as his credentials state.

A State of Alaska Department of Corrections Memo dated November 30, 1989, states the following, "contacted the reference desk at the Loussac Library in Anchorage. The clerk gave me a list of all the Bible Colleges in the lower 48 that included the word "Trinity" in the name. Over a period of several days, I called each college or seminary to inquire if Mr. Rapacki attended and/or graduated from their college. Not one of the registrars I talked with could find any record either in files or computer recored that listed Mr. Rapacki as having been a student, graduating, or receiving any kind of degree from their college" (Memo, State of Alaska Department of Corrections, by Sharon Komarek, Clerk Typist III, November 30, 1989)

Mr. Rapacki's claim of having been a law enforcement officer is equally bogus. Information reveals that "Mr. Rapacki had never been a certified Sheriff's Deputy,...in fact served only as a Reserve Officer... Mr. Rapacki was terminated as a Reserve Deputy as a result of Mr. Rapacki wearing his Reserve Deputy uniform while attempting to collect past due rents from the apartment complex which he managed." (Affadavit of Fred C. Smith, First Assistant District Attorney, dated Nov. 17, 1989)

The State of Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners states hey have no record of Mr. Rapacki being licensed. (Affadavit, Mrs. Peggy C. La Voy, Executive Director, State of Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners, dated Nov. 24, 1989)

He is not now, nor has he ever been, on the faculty of the Arizona State Supreme Court. After a lengthy correspondence between Mr. Rapacki and the Court, he signed an agreement which stated in part that he agreed to, "Immediately cease and desist from using or making any reference, written, verbal, or otherwise, regarding any past, present or possible future association with the Arizona Supreme Court ... cease and desist from representing that he at any time had any faculty status with the ... Arizona Supreme Court. To immediately delete from any and all correspondence and publications any reference to any association with the Arizona Supreme Court..." (Agreement between Arizona Supreme Court and Lyle J. Rapacki, dated April 24, 1989.)

Finally, we discovered that the name of his organization "INTEL" was a violation of the law. "INTEL" is in fact the business licensed name of a computer corporation ... and use of that name is illegal". (Memorandum State of Alaska Department of Corrections, Dated November 29, 1989.

Mr. Rapacki has been used as a training resource by police departments and an expert witness in at least one murder trial. It would appear that at that trial he committed perjury by claiming background which he did not, in fact, possess.

The recommendation in "File 18 Newsletter" appeared in the same issue which touted Lauren Stratford's Satan's Underground, another source recently proven less than reliable, by saying, " it qualifies as an investigaror's handbook for organized crime. ... This book will be must reading..." In light of the recent findings on Stratford and Rapacki, it would seem to us that Lt. Jones and others should check thoroughly the credentials of their "experts" before giving a recommendation. It's much easier than wiping egg off the face after the fact.

UPDATE: ALBUQUERQUE'S SATANIC PLAYGROUND

We have received more information on the "Satanic" ritual site in Albuquerque which turned out to be a playing field for a new game, "Terf."

Albuquerque Mayor David Rusk was quoted as stating "This story gave me the best belly laugh I've had in years."

Letters to the editor reflected citizens's opinions which denounced the "experts" and the police and wondered just what "experts" like that were doing advising law enforcement and getting paid with taxpayer monies.

CWR is encouraged to see that taxpayers, who often foot the bill for hysterical over-reactions like this are asking questions.
