I've mentioned the movie reviewer on KFOG (a San Francisco rock station) once or twice before. This morning he reviewed "Battlefield Earth."

First, he mentioned the new IMAX film, which promotes the 150th anniversary of California's statehood (I think), which he said has some really cool shots, including people climbing huge sequoias and then climbing down INSIDE some of the hollowed-out trees.

Then, he went on (although I use quotes to indicate his voice rather than mine, the following is NOT an exact quote - only close):

"Slightly less effective is Battlefield Earth. If you can't have decent visual effects in a science fiction movie in this day and age, you're in serious trouble. During the screening I saw, during the credits, the biggest round of applause was for the name L. Ron Hubbard, so I think there were a few Scientologists there." He described how John Travolta had been trying for so long to make this film that he ended up having to play the evil alien instead of the hero, which caused the djs to chuckle. "Sincere warning: they have only filmed the first half of the book. Don't go to this movie, or they'll make the second half too. Don't go! I can find where you live, I will hunt you down. You will be sorry, we all will be sorry. Save the planet."

You can read a lengthier review at his web site. It starts with an anecdote about LRH saying the way to make money is to start a religion, and ends by saying, "under no circumstances should you go see this move. It'll only encourage them."

The reviewer is Pat Healy, whose claim to fame is that he was a five-time winner on "Jeopardy."
