BATTLEFIELD EARTH (PG-13) Not funny, not exciting, not attractive, this is one losing Battlefield. It didn't need bad publicity (Internet rumors that this adaptation of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi novel would subliminally convert viewers to the sect) to tank; bad filmmaking should take care of that. A tired plot, ugly production design and chaotic action scenes that make it impossible to tell what's happening mark yet another post-apocalyptic tale of a small band of human survivors (led by Barry Pepper as Jonnie Goodboy Tyler) who fight to retake Earth from their alien captors (John Travolta plays Psychlo security chief Terl). -- SW
