I have a 1979 5hp Mariner outboard. It shifts smoothly into forward gear but grinds and goes in hard for reverse (but works). You can feel it resisting even when the motor isn't running. How can I fix it? Bob. Thanks.

ba. remove the drain plug, if the oil looks like silver paint, then its time to overhaul the lower unit, buy your self a "seloc manual" for your motor if you intend to try to repair it your self, be very careful and clean every thing completely,

Fleethawk,
I thought WWW8 would tell me more about adjusting the linkage but Not yet I guess.
This outboard should only have 15 hours on it and the gear case oil is ok. I also think it might be that the linkage is slightly out of adjustment. I just don't know how to do it. We took the front plate off the shifter and there is a bolt and lockwasher in the center front. Maybe you or WWW8 can expand on this. Thank you. Bob.

if the oil is clean, then the linkage could be out of adjustment, i still recomend that you get a Selco manual for your motor call local boat dealers, one of them will have the manual or can get it for you, its hard to go step by step tyring the info you need with out you having the pictures to see what im talking about....if i can be of more help please write me
