Most marine dealers carry a series of books that illustrate step-by-step directions on changing a water pump, as well as a host of other common outboard problems. These books run about $5-8 and are well worth the small investment. When you attempt to change the water pump, make sure you buy a water pump kit and change ALL the parts. At the same time, change your lower unit oil and you should be in good shape for the season.
